MARIETTA -- Marietta City Schools Board of Education held its final meeting for 2018 on Monday celebrating Third Grade reading test scores and a new partner in education for Washington Elementary School.
"Those results were out of the ballpark," said Director of Curriculum and Technology Jona Hall. "Our paper and pencil results are also in for those students with additional special education needs that did not take the online test and I'm pretty happy with those results too, that's a difficult test."
Tasha Werry, the district's Director of Community Outreach and Grants Tasha, also took time in the meeting to thank Brant Whited, owner of Movement Fitness, a family fitness center in the Frontier Shopping Center, for becoming a partner in education with Washington Elementary.
"We're looking forward to cultivating that partnership and that family atmosphere and inviting the students to come down the hill and promote wellness and maybe even a little competition with their teachers," said Whited as he explained the gym space is built with a family's needs in mind.
But the meeting was not all built on positive expressions.
Boardmember Mark Duckworth voiced several concerns with the superintendent and treasurer evaluation process which the board recently completed. He said the evaluation process which occurred did not follow state law, board policy nor align with the job descriptions of either position.
"The job description for the superintendent was done in 2006 and was 12 years out of date," said Duckworth. "The job description for the treasurer was from February of 2000, 17 years out of date."
He said his evaluation notes of the two positions, held by Will Hampton and Frank Antill respectively, were ignored in the evaluation process.
Boardmembers Russ Garrison and Stacey Hall responded to Duckworth's comments saying he had the opportunity to voice his concerns during the evaluation process as early as June of this year.
Hall said the evaluation forms used to review the work of Hampton and Antill were the same as were used to evaluate administration at the Washington County Career Center.
"The forms that we're using were developed by the (Ohio School Boards Association)," added Garrison. "We went line by line … everybody's input was shared with the administrators and boardmembers … when we went through that Mark was silent."
The board also reviewed and removed from the consent agenda a proposed supplemental contract for an assistant varsity wrestling coach pending additional information from the district's athletic director concerning the participation numbers and needs of all district sports.
