MARIETTA -- An Oak Grove area home was lost in a Sunday afternoon fire.
Firefighters from the Reno Volunteer Fire Department, the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department, the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department and the Fearing Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at 202 Simpson St. at 3:27 p.m., Reno VFD Chief Dan Ritchey said.
Three firefighters from Fearing were in the area on another matter and ran to the scene when the call went out, Ritchey said, adding the firefighters stayed and helped out with efforts.
"(Reports from the scene said) flames were coming out of the windows and the roof," he said.
The fire was already fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene and officials did not believe the home could be saved. Ritchey said the fire started around an oil-filled heater on the front porch used to help keep animals on the property warm. Officials have not determined exactly what happened to ignite the fire.
"It caught the porch on fire and then the house," he said.
No animals were hurt as they had the means to get away.
There was no hydrant near the scene of the fire and firefighters had to rely on tanker trucks to get water to the scene. There were four tanker trucks being used to bring water to the scene. It is estimated around 5,000 gallons of water had to be transported to the scene.
Ritchey said the fire was under control within 20 minutes and out within an hour. There were a total of 38 firefighters on the scene. There was concern of it spreading as a neighbor's vinyl siding had melted.
The home's owner, Adrian Chamberlain, had tried to go back in the house to get something when she suffered minor burns.
The fire has been ruled accidental, Ritchey said. The home is a total loss.
