VFW honors Ritchie County teacher

HARRISVILLE -- A Ritchie County teacher has been named a West Virginia Teacher of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Robin Haddox of Ritchie County Middle School is the winner in the 6-8 grade level. Haddox will be entered into the Smart-Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Award contest.

The VFW Teacher of the Year contest recognizes exceptional teachers for outstanding commitment to teaching students about Americanism and patriotism. Tolsia High School Spanish Teacher Roberta Holland was recognized on the high school level.

Haddox represented VFW Blennerhassett Post 1212. She received a plaque, which was presented by Todd Kingsbury, commander of the VFW in West Virginia.

Her curriculum vitae includes:

* Daughter of a World War II veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor.

* Graduate of Glenville State College.

* Prepares students for the West Virginia History Bowl.

* Maintains the Veterans Wall of Honor at Ritchie County Middle School.

* Recognized by the VFW for preparing students for the VFW Patriot's Pen Essay Contest.

* Distributed and promoted information about the Veterans Memorial in Cairo.

* Presented the Thatcher Award by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

* Organized the Veterans Day program and dinner at the middle school for the past eight years.
