Deadline looms for Sports Jamboree
CAIRO — Now in its 39th year, the International Sports Jamboree is scheduled for July 14-16 at North Bend State Park in Ritchie County.
The Jamboree is for physically or visually challenged people from ages 8-40. Events fashioned especially for the visually or physically challenged are the highlight of the weekend, with practice sessions and opening ceremonies on July 14, at the amphitheater. Friday night events also includes musical entertainment.
This year’s theme is Salute to the Armed Forces – to those who have served, to those who are serving, and to those who have given their lives for our freedom.
Opening ceremonies on July 15 begin at 8 a.m. at the games area near the amphitheater. Events include the 40-yard race, jamb toss, basketball games for wheelchair participants, basketball free throw for visually impaired, bicycle, bowling, bump-me-ball, team relays, air rifle, and horseshoes. An awards ceremony will be 6:30 p.m. at the park amphitheater, followed by a talent show and an evening dance.
Jamboree weekend is a time when children, youth and adults with disabilities can enjoy what most others take for granted – all made possible by the year-long planning of volunteers from WV Chapter 42 and AT&T Pioneers 126, along with North Bend State Park staff and other volunteers, a press release states.
Over the years, more than 1,000 young people from across the U. S. and Canada have participated, and from this Jamboree, other Jamborees have started across the U. S. Persons of all ages and abilities use the facilities at North Bend, from the blacktopped games area to the paved nature trail (the extra mile trail) to the wheelchair accessible amphitheater. The nature center will be open for children who are not participating in the games.
Deadline for contestant application is June 10 and volunteers are always welcome to assist during the weekend.
