Vanity Shop bankruptcy forcing closure of Vienna store

VIENNA — The Vanity store at Grand Central Mall is closing.

Vanity Shop of Grand Forks Inc. announced recently it is closing all 137 of its Vanity stores, including the location in Vienna.

The company is providing shoppers in 27 states with significant discounts on over $29 million (at MSRP) of women’s and juniors’ apparel and accessories, according to a press release from the company.

Tiger Capital Group, which provides asset valuation, advisory and disposition services to a broad range of retail, wholesale and industrial clients, is conducting the going-out-of-business sale, which is now underway, the company said.

The announcement follows the company’s filing of a voluntary petition for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on March 1 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of North Dakota (Case No. 17-30112).

“With roots stretching back to North Dakota in the late 1950s, Vanity is known for offering a wide selection of quality, affordable apparel, accessories and footwear targeted to fashion-conscious young females,” said Michael McGrail, COO of Tiger Group. “During the sale, shoppers across the country will find deals starting at 10 percent to 30 percent off on Vanity’s expansive offering.

“The company’s difficult decision to close all stores is emblematic of the pressures facing mall-based specialty apparel retailers in the wake of ever-increasing competition from big-box ‘fast-fashion’ chains and e-commerce sites.”

The stores, which average 3,000 square feet in size, carry coats, jackets, jeans, slacks, dresses, skirts, shorts, fashion and basic tops, T-shirts, sweatshirts, vests, sweaters, scarves, hats, leggings, tights, boots, sandals, wallets, jewelry, sunglasses, and hair accessories.

Vanity gift cards will continue to be honored during the store closing process.

Tiger will also be liquidating store fixtures and equipment, as well as furniture, fixtures and equipment from the company’s distribution centers.

The news comes in the wake of other store closings in the area, including the southside Kmart store and electronics store hhGregg, which is also located on the Grand Central Mall property.

Jody Hopkins, general manager of Grand Central Mall, said, in a prepared statement, change is a part of its business.

“Brands come and go and that has always been the case in the retail industry,” Hopkins said. ”When there is a store closing, we actively seek to introduce new retail, food or entertainment options that enhance the property.”

”We will continue to welcome new shopping and dining choices, as well as offer community events for the whole family to enjoy,” Hopkins said.

Starting at $3.70/week.
