PARKERSBURG – Three new Parkersburg Fire Department firefighters were sworn in at the Municipal Building on Monday.
Brett Ullman, Ben Kunselman and Clayton Stunkard were sworn in by Mayor Bob Newell in a short ceremony at the mayor’s office, said Parkersburg Fire Department Capt. Tim Flinn.
The new firefighters will fill three empty spots for the fire department, Flinn said. One of those vacancies is from a firefighter relocating to another department and the other two are due to recent retirements.
Ullman joins the Parkersburg Fire Department from the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department. Kunselman was at the Blennerhassett Volunteer Fire Department and Stunkard worked at the Charleston Fire Department.
Their firefighting experience makes them good candidates for the Parkersburg Fire Department, Flinn said. All three will begin a six-week training period with the fire department, during which they will be trained in Parkersburg-specific regulations.
Each will then enter a one-year probationary period with the department.
Each man completed an interview process which included meeting mental and physical requirements as well as passing a background check before they were hired, Flinn said.
Kunselman and Ullman will begin an apprenticeship with the fire department, Flinn said. Stunkard completed his apprenticeship while at the Charleston Fire Department.
Kunselman is the son of Capt. Mark Kunselman, who is a shift commander at Station One with the Parkersburg Fire Department.
