Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Ohio Valley receives $10,000 gift

PARKERSBURG -- The associates and staff of a local real estate company donated $10,000 to Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Ohio Valley.
"The contribution is an investment in the community," Ted Gaston, a broker at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Real Estate Center, said. The funds will sponsor a house in Parkersburg.
"We make a living by selling houses, so we want to invest back into our community for those who need help with housing," Gaston said.
The collection involved several group projects including 50/50 raffles, a jewelry vendor show, collecting coins in pop bottles and help from agents who wrote personal checks or had money taken out of each closing.
The presentation was made Tuesday at Berkshire Hathaway's annual company Awards Presentation.
"We are so grateful that Berkshire Hathaway realtors have kept Habitat at the forefront of their thoughts this past year," Alvin Phillips, executive director of Habitat MOV, said. "Their efforts have resulted not only in a generous donation, but in many others becoming aware of the value of Habitat and its mission."
After donating this money to start a Habitat home, the Berkshire Hathaway agents and staff hope to help build that house by participating in its construction in 2019.
"Giving back is one of the basic principles of our company," Linda McLean, co-owner and general manager, said. "We absolutely believe that in the end, it doesn't matter how many houses we sold in our career; it matters how many people we helped along the way."
Another project each year by Berkshire Hathaway is the placement of 10,000 American flags in the community on July 4 to honor service members.
"We are glad that we are able to contribute to or sponsor events for over 30 local charities and civic groups in the Mid-Ohio Valley," said Terry Connolly, a Vietnam War veteran and co-owner of the company.
Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Ohio Valley serves Wood and Washington counties.
