United Way to auction purses in Marietta

MARIETTA — A purse auction to benefit the United Way is set for today at the Quality Inn, 700 Pike St.

“We have a few folks planning to purchase tickets at the door and of course we’re not going to turn anyone away, but it should be pretty full if we sell out,” said Amanda Haney-Cech, ex-officio of the United Way’s board of directors.

This is the second year the purse auction will benefit the United Way of Washington County and United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley.

“Last year brought in about $10,000 so we’d like to do the same this year,” said Cech. “It’s a great way to make a huge impact by coming to one event because for every dollar, 99 cents goes back into your community through programs for children, the elderly, those with disabilities and the homeless. That’s a huge impact.”

It is a chance for the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Marietta College to provide a night of community service.

“They’re helping with serving food, modeling bags and with the silent auction items too,” said Cech. “I did a presentation with them talking about what the United Way does here and got to thinking about what it does in their hometowns too.”

Coach Jon Vanderwal said his men are thankful for the opportunity to give back to a community that gives them so much support.

“Amanda works with my guys in the academic resource center and helps them and obviously this is for a good cause so we try to get out and do community service,” said Vanderwal. “Especially because we’re still on (winter) break we don’t have classes right now so they can get out on a Thursday night and have a good time and help. You wouldn’t think about a men’s basketball team at a purse auction but it’s comical and fun.”

Cech said the auction so far will play host to 21 purses for the live auction and 24 silent auction items.

“We’ll even have a few masculine things as well that either you can buy for your husband or he can come and get,” she said. “Last year we had between 100 and 120 people come and this year we’re looking at a market price value so far of over $10,000 in Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Kate Spade, Tori Burch, Vera Bradley, Tommy Hilfiger and Betsey Johnson merchandise.”

Tickets are available at the United Way office. For more information, contact United Way of Washington County at 740-373-3333.
