BELPRE — Students at Belpre Elementary summer school sampled and purchased locally grown fruits and vegetables Wednesday as part of the pop-up River City Farmers Market.

Marcus McCartney, extension educator for the Ohio State University Washington County Extension Service, said the mobile farmers market gives students the chance to sample healthy foods and to learn about supporting local farmers.

“The goal is to influence further healthy consumers,” he said. “And hopefully when they eat healthy, they buy local.”

Several dozen kindergarten through third-graders received aprons, reusable bags, and were able to purchase foods using wooden coins. The market also featured informational booths and yoga activities.
