VIENNA — The Sears store at the Grand Central Mall will be closing in early December, according to an email Tuesday from Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings Corporation.

”We are making the difficult, but necessary decision to close the Sears store at Grand Central Mall in Vienna, W.Va.,” Riefs said in the email. ”We will close to the public in early December 2018. Until then, it will remain open for customers.”

The store will begin its liquidation sale on Friday.

”We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and have accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores as previously announced,” Riefs said.

He said the number of associates at the Grand Central Mall store is not publicly available.

Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores, Riefs wrote.

When contacted Tuesday, Vienna Mayor Randy Rapp and Mall Manager Jody Hopkins said they had not heard about the store closing.
