VIENNA -- Kmarts in Vienna and Marietta again escaped the ax as Sears Holding Co. Thursday announced the closure of 28 more stores around the country.
The closest closure is a Kmart in Massillon, Ohio, according to the list provided by Sears Holding.
It's good news for Vienna, for the time being, according to Vienna Mayor Randy Rapp.
"That's good news, but it's bad news too," he said. " "Eventually they are going to run out of stores to close."
Marietta Mayor Joe Matthews expressed the same relief.
"We've escaped again," he said. "I'm glad we're not one of them."
Sears Holdings on Thursday said it continues to lose millions of dollars from its Sears and Kmart stores. The company said it was focused on restructuring in announcing the plans to close another 28 Kmarts by mid-November.
"We continued to focus on streamlining our operations, reducing inventory and operating expenses, and are taking incremental actions to further improve the company's performance," the company said.
Thursday's announcement will raise the number of closed Sears and Kmarts to 358 this year.
Kmart in south Parkersburg was among the 2017 casualties. The company announced the closure of the south Parkersburg site in December and after a liquidation where goods were offered at deep discounts, the store closed in April.
Other closures in West Virginia were Sears at the Meadowbrook Mall in Bridgeport, Kmart in Elkins and Sears in the Town Center Mall in Charleston
Restructuring has saved $1 billion through the end of the second quarter of this hear, the company said. The goal was $1.25 billion.
Sales fell 11.5 percent for the time period.
Kmart comparable store sales decreased 9.4 percent with a 6.8 percent decline excluding the impact of the consumer electronics and pharmacy categories, while Sears comparable store sales declined 13.2 percent with a 12.1 percent decline excluding consumer electronics category, Sears said.
Remaining as of Thursday are 610 Kmarts and 619 Sears stores, down from 883 Kmarts and 683 Sears at the beginning of the fiscal year.
"We are making progress on the strategic priorities we outlined earlier this year and remain focused on returning our company to profitability. The comprehensive restructuring of our operations is delivering cost efficiencies and helping drive improvements to our operating performance," Edward S. Lampert, chairman and chief executive officer of Sears Holdings, said.
"While the third quarter has historically been our most difficult quarter over the past several years, we are working towards making meaningful improvement in our performance this year as a result of the restructuring actions we have put in place, and our continued focus on the expansion of our Shop Your Way ecosystem," Lampert said.
