West Virginia Early Voting Starts Wednesday

WHEELING - Early voting for the Nov. 3 general election starts Wednesday across West Virginia.

Early polls open Wednesday, Oct. 21 and voting continues weekdays and Saturdays through Oct. 31. There is no voting on Sundays.

In Ohio County, the public may cast ballots from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day in the municipal courtroom of the first floor of the City-County Building, 1500 Chapline St., Wheeling. In Marshall County, the hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, and voting takes place in the basement at the courthouse.

"We've got all the machines ready to go," said Marshall County Clerk Connie Howard. "A lot of people like early voting. That way they are not tied down to Election Day.

"The important thing is to just get out and vote. We see a lot of people early voting. It is very convenient for people to stop by while in town during those 10 days."

Both Howard and Erin Allietta, coordinator of elections in Ohio County, wanted to remind voters that they must bring photo identification with them to the polls.

"We're not expecting long lines," Allietta said. "This gives voters the opportunity to come at their convenience - or on a Saturday or on a lunch break - so they are not worrying about long lines."

She expects early voting turnout to be a little higher than during the primary election, when 1,184 voters cast early ballots in Ohio County.

Allietta told Ohio County Commissioners during their meeting on Tuesday, "We're ready to go."

She added 50 high school students will be working for the county doing election-related work on Election Day, Nov. 3. Most will be at the polls, while others will be assisting at the City-County Building.

Polls on Election Day will open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
