South Carolina’s Stewart suspended indefinitely

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina edge rusher Dylan Stewart was suspended indefinitely after throwing a punch at an Alabama player on Saturday night, coach Shane Beamer announced Sunday.

Stewart was called for a personal foul after he punched tight end Josh Ford in the helmet in the fourth quarter of the Gamecocks’ 49-18 loss in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Beamer said he would make a decision early this week about when, and if, Stewart will return. Stewart, who is widely projected to be a first-round pick in next year’s NFL draft, was ruled out of Saturday’s home game against No. 24 Kentucky.

“There’s a standard of how we do things in this program, and that was not it last night,” Beamer said. “It’s beyond the punch. The punch is unacceptable. He’s not the first person to ever, unfortunately, throw a punch in a football game, and he won’t be the last. But it’s some of the other stuff that isn’t how we do things in this program. Accountability is a core value of this program, and we are all accountable to the standard.”

Stewart, an Associated Press preseason All-America first-team pick, missed the first two games of the season because of a back injury. He has one tackle for loss and three quarterback hurries in two games.

Michigan St. RB Edwards out for season

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan State running back Cam Edwards had a season-ending knee injury in a loss to Nebraska, coach Pat Fitzgerald said Monday.

Edwards ran for 304 yards and three touchdowns in three-plus games for the Spartans before he was hurt in the first quarter of a 31-13 loss to the Cornhuskers on Saturday.

He transferred to Michigan State after running for 1,240 yards and 15 touchdowns last season at Connecticut and having 2,690 yards rushing and 27 touchdowns over four years with the Huskies.

The Spartans (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) play at Wisconsin (3-1, 1-0) on Saturday.

Notre Dame receiver needs season-ending surgery

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- No. 3 Notre Dame has lost receiver Quincy Porter for the rest of the season, coach Marcus Freeman said Monday.

The New Jersey native has not played this season after transferring from Ohio State. Porter missed several games with the Buckeyes in 2025 because of a left knee injury and had surgery on his patellar tendon in January.

Porter was still working his way back from that injury and Freeman said the Fighting Irish (4-0) thought the receiver may get back on the field. Instead, he needs season-ending surgery.

“I wanted to start with, obviously, tough news for Quincy,” Freeman said as he opened Monday’s weekly news conference. “He came to Notre Dame post patellar surgery and it was pretty long, tough healing process. About a month ago, he had another procedure that we thought was going to be the last thing he needed to get him back to game ready and he was getting really close and had a flare up. Then, ultimately, he had an MRI this weekend and the doctors decided that he’ll have to have season-ending surgery to get his patellar where it needs to go.”

Porter was a highly touted recruit out of national powerhouse Bergen Catholic High School, but played in only five games and caught only four passes for 59 yards in 2025 with the Buckeyes.

The Irish had hoped Porter and another Ohio State transfer, Mylan Graham, would add talent and depth to an already strong receiving corps led by Jordan Faison and Jaden Greathouse.

But Porter could not play and Graham has only three catches for 32 yards as Notre Dame enters October with a perfect record for the first time since 2021. The Irish travel to North Carolina on Saturday.

“He’s a great young man that has really done everything right, and he’s got another setback,” Freeman said, describing Porter. “But his mind is in the right place, so he’ll be back at some point before we know it.”

Hauck out after 4 games as Illinois DC

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck has parted ways with the program just four games into his first season, coach Bret Bielema announced Sunday.

Bielema had hired the former Montana head coach to replace Aaron Henry, who left to be co-defensive coordinator at Notre Dame.

The Illini (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) lost 42-19 at Ohio State on Saturday and enter this week 100th nationally in scoring defense, 111th in total defense and 119th in pass defense.

“Coach Hauck reached out to me early this morning and asked to meet ahead of our planned meeting time,” Bielema said. “We met and mutually agreed that a change in leadership was in the best interests of our defense. Coach Hauck and I agreed this is the best path forward for our staff, and most importantly, our student-athletes, at this time. I would like to thank Bobby for his work with our program.”

Bielema did not announce a successor to Hauck, who was hired less than a week after he announced his retirement from Montana in February.

“I enjoyed being a part of the staff here at Illinois and working alongside Coach Bielema every day,” Hauck said. “I am very appreciative of the opportunity to be here and thankful for all of the hard work from the players, coaches, and staff. I wish Illinois the best of luck.”

Illinois hosts Purdue on Saturday.
