Reds beat Brewers to avoid sweep

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Sal Stewart and Jose Trevino homered off Jacob Misiorowski, and Chase Burns pitched six strong innings as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 on Thursday afternoon.
TJ Friedl also went deep for Cincinnati as the Reds beat the Brewers for the first time in seven attempts this season. Garrett Mitchell homered for Milwaukee.
The game featured two of baseball’s best and hardest-throwing pitchers in Burns and Misiorowski. Burns (10-1) earned the win by giving up two runs and four hits. Burns is the only Reds pitcher since at least 1900 to open a season by allowing two runs or fewer in 15 of his first 17 starts.
Misiorowski (9-4) struck out 10 and walked none in five innings while reaching a peak velocity of 103.8 mph, but the five runs he allowed matched a career high. Only one of the runs was earned.
The most recent time Misiorowski allowed five runs came on Aug. 15 of last season, when he lasted only 1 1/3 innings in a 10-8 victory at Cincinnati.
Misiorowski had gone 8-1 with an 0.54 ERA over his last 10 starts.
Stewart put Cincinnati ahead for good in the first inning by hitting his 17th homer, a 402-foot solo shot on a 102.3-mph fastball. According to MLB.com, it was the eighth-fastest pitch to result in a homer since the pitch tracking era began in 2008.
Cincinnati extended its lead to 5-0 by scoring four unearned runs in the fourth inning.
JJ Bleday led off with a bunt and reached safely when first baseman Jake Bauers dropped the bare-handed throw from third baseman David Hamilton. Bleday scored on Noelvi Marte’s one-out single.
The Reds had two on with two outs when Trevino stepped to the plate. Trevino fell behind 0-2 before working the count full and hitting his first homer since June 8, 2025.
Trevino went 3 for 4 to improve his batting average from .192 to .232.
Cincinnati’s Sam Moll, Tejay Antone and Brock Burke didn’t allow a baserunner in three innings of relief.
Up next: Reds return home to face the Baltimore Orioles. Friday’s scheduled starters are Cincinnati’s Brady Singer (3-7, 5.12 ERA) and Baltimore’s Trevor Rodgers (5-7, 4.99).
NATIONALS 10, RED SOX 2
BOSTON (AP) -- James Woods belted a three-run homer for his 22nd of the season, Andrés Chaparro and Nasim Nuñez each hit their first and Washington beat Boston at steamy Fenway Park to take the series.
Chaparro’s was a two-run shot, and Luis García Jr. added a pinch-hit, two-run single as the Nationals rebounded to close a 4-2 trip after losing the series opener on Monday.
Boston closed a 5-2 homestand after sweeping a four-game series against the Yankees.
TIGERS 6, YANKEES 2, 11 INNINGS
NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees’ losing streak stretched to seven, their longest in three years, as Camilo Doval forced in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk to Spencer Torkelson in a four-run 11th inning that gave Detroit a victory.
New York rallied with two runs in the ninth and stranded runners at second and third in the 10th when Keider Montero (5-5) struck out Ali Sánchez.
With two outs and one on in the 11th, Doval (3-1) intentionally walked Riley Greene, then issued consecutive walks to Hao-Yu Lee and Torkelson. Zach McKinstry followed with a two-run single and another run scored on a throwing error by Sánchez, the Yankees catcher -- New York’s 17th error in 12 games.
New York is on its longest losing streak since a nine-game skid from Aug. 12-22, 2023. The Yankees, missing Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Trent Grishman, had seven hits and totaled just 23 in their last six games. New York has lost 11 of 14 and is 12-15 since Judge fractured a rib.
Detroit took three games from New York, its first series sweep of the Yankees since 2008.
CUBS 23, PADRES 3
CHICAGO (AP) -- Dansby Swanson hit three home runs, including a grand slam, Michael Conforto homered twice and Chicago pounded San Diego.
Swanson had a career-high eight RBIs – second-most in major league history from a player batting ninth. Seiya Suzuki, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch also homered for the Cubs, who scored their most runs in a home game since 1977.
Swanson, who hit two home runs Tuesday, became the first Cub with back-to-back multihomer games since Patrick Wisdom in August 2021. He has nine home runs and 29 RBIs over the past 13 games.
A day after the Padres and Cubs combined for nine homers in a 9-7 Cubs win Tuesday, they combined for nine more with the wind howling to center again as Sung-Min Song hit the first of his career for the Padres. The Cubs are 14-5 with the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field this season.
The Cubs (49-38) have won five straight after sweeping the Padres (43-42), who have lost five in a row.
BLUE JAYS 9, METS 3
TORONTO (AP) -- Nolan McLean and three relievers combined on a six-hitter, Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens both hit solo home runs and New York beat Toronto.
Brooks Raley pitched the seventh, Luke Weaver worked the eighth and Devin Williams finished for his 12th save in 13 chances.
The Mets posted their fourth shutout and won for the second time in five games since Andy Green took over as interim manager when Carlos Mendoza was fired last Friday.
With their second win in 11 games, the Mets (36-50) avoided falling 16 games below .500. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the most games under .500 for a team that reached the postseason was 16 by the 1914 Boston Braves (12-28).
The Mets are 19-10 when they hit two or more home runs.
The Blue Jays have lost seven of eight. The shutout loss was their fourth.
BRAVES 5, CARDINALS 1
ATLANTA (AP) -- Nathan Church hit a three-run homer, Nelson Velázquez added a solo shot and Matthew Liberatore threw five strong innings as St. Louis beat NL East-leading Atlanta.
Velázquez started a four-run fourth inning with his third homer of the year -- a 444-foot shot to center field that tied the game at 1. Church followed later in the inning with his sixth homer of the season, a three-run shot, to increase the lead to 4-1.
Liberatore (4-5) struck out nine and allowed one run on one hit. Coming into the game, Liberatore had a 10.34 ERA in the month of June. Riley O’Brien pitched a scoreless ninth inning and earned his 21st save of the season.
Jordan capped the scoring for St. Louis with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Masyn Winn in the top of the sixth.
Martín Pérez (6-5) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings for Atlanta.
RAYS 4, ROYALS 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Junior Caminero homered in his sixth straight game to match the Tampa Bay record, hitting a two-run shot in the first first inning to help the Rays beat Kansas City for their seventh victory in a row.
Caminero hit his 24th homer on the first pitch he saw from Seth Lugo (3-6) following Jonathan Aranda’s one-out single. Caminero tied Carlos Peña’s team record set in 2010.
Caminero is two away from tying the major league record of eight set by the Pirates’ Dale Long in 1956 and matched by the Yankees’ Don Mattingly in 1987 and the Mariners’ Ken Griffey Jr. in 1993. Rafael Devers was the last player to homer in six straight games, doing so for the Red Sox in May of 2024.
Shane McClanahan (7-5) limited Kansas City to three hits in six innings, throwing 49 of 69 pitches for strikes. The left-hander got back on track after going 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in four June starts.
Cole Sulser struck out two in a scoreless seventh. Garrett Cleavinger got two outs in the eighth but left with two runners on base. Kevin Kelly retired Bobby Witt Jr. on a comebacker to end the threat. Kelly allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth before closing it out for his fourth save.
TWINS 8, ASTROS 3
HOUSTON (AP) -- Taj Bradley struck out 11 to tie his career high, Josh Bell, Kody Clemens and Luke Keaschall homered and Minnesota beat Houston.
Bradley (7-3) allowed a run and four hits and walked four in five innings. After Jose Altuve scored from third base when Isaac Paredes grounded into a double play in the first inning, Bradley recorded 10 consecutive outs by strikeout.
Bell has a career-high 16-game road hitting streak, the longest active streak of its kind in the majors. Trevor Larnach went 3 for 5 with a double and a two-run single.
The Twins have won three consecutive road series for the first time May of 2025.
ROCKIES 6, MARLINS 3
DENVER (AP) -- Mickey Moniak finished a single shy of the cycle, Hunter Goodman hit a two-run homer to cap a four-run fifth inning and Colorado beat Miami to snap an eight-game losing streak against the Marlins.
Moniak homered for a second straight game when he hit the sixth pitch from Max Meyer (9-1) for his 14th of the season to put the Rockies up 1-0 in the first.
Moniak doubled in the third and then tripled to drive in the first two runs in the fifth. Goodman followed with his 27th homer for a 5-2 lead.
Goodman tied Larry Walker’s team record for most home runs before the All-Star break and has 11 more games to surpass it.
All four runs off Meyer in the fifth were unearned after an error by second baseman Javier Sanoja extended the inning. Sanoja hit a two-run triple in the fourth off Kyle Freeland (2-7) to put Miami up 2-1.
ATHLETICS 7, DODGERS 1
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Shea Langeliers hit his 20th home run and the Athletics defeated Los Angeles to stop a four-game losing streak, their longest this season.
Jonah Heim and Alika Williams also homered for the A’s. J.T. Ginn (7-4) allowed one run and three hits in six innings to win for the fourth time in his last five starts. Ginn walked five and struck out four.
Freddie Freeman homered for the major league-leading Dodgers (56-31), extending his on-base steak to 16 games.
Los Angeles finished a 7-2 trip, one night after manager Dave Roberts became the fastest manager to reach 1,000 career wins.
GIANTS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 4
PHOENIX (AP) -- Trevor McDonald pitched six scoreless innings, Victor Bericoto hit a two-run homer and San Francisco beat Arizona.
Heliot Ramos had a solo homer and an RBI triple to help the Giants snap an eight-game skid against Arizona. San Francisco avoided being swept by the Diamondbacks for the third time this year and its first 0-9 start to a season against a single opponent in franchise history.
McDonald (3-6) allowed one hit -- a leadoff single by Ketel Marte in the fourth -- and struck out five without a walk. The 25-year-old right-hander was 0-6 with a 6.47 ERA in his previous seven starts.
Caleb Kilian pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts for his seventh save.
