Cubs on a roll, defeat Orioles 5-2

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Matthew Boyd pitched six shutout innings, Alex Bregman drove in two runs and Chicago beat Baltimore, 5-2.
Miguel Amaya scored three times for the Cubs, who have won 11 of 14 to tighten their grip on the top spot in the NL wild card.
Making his third start since being sidelined for seven weeks with a knee injury, Boyd (4-1) allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked two. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 1.72 ERA since returning from the injured list on June 25.
Cubs reliever Ryan Rolison entered in the seventh with a 4-0 lead and promptly gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases. Adley Rutschman delivered a two-out, two-run single off former Oriole Jacob Webb before Gunnar Henderson struck out.
Tyler Ferguson worked a perfect eighth and Trent Thornton got three straight outs for his second save.
TIGERS 6, ATHLETICS 2
DETROIT (AP) -- Tarik Skubal struck out nine over five innings and Colt Keith hit a two-run homer to lead Detroit to a victory over the Athletics.
Skubal (5-4) struck out the side in the first inning for the second time in his career and left after 96 pitches. The left-hander allowed five hits and walked two. His only blemish came on rookie Henry Bolte’s third homer, a leadoff shot in the third that cut it to 2-1.
Kevin McGonigle, headed to the All-Star Game as a rookie, drew an eight-pitch walk from J.T. Ginn (7-5) leading off the first and Keith hit his next pitch for his seventh homer and a lead the Tigers never relinquished. Detroit (41-50) has won three straight and six of its last seven games.
Kyle Finnegan pitched a scoreless sixth following Skubal, and Drew Anderson allowed Shea Langeliers’ RBI single for an unearned run in the seventh. Jacob Waguespack closed it out with two perfect innings.
Ginn left in favor of Jacob Lopez after allowing two runs on two hits in four innings.
Detroit broke it open with a four-run sixth after Lopez retired the first two batters.
MARLINS 6, MARINERS 5 (10)
MIAMI (AP) -- Jakob Marsee hit a game-ending single off the wall in right field in the 10th inning, and Miami beat Seattle Mariners 6-5 on Tuesday night.
With runners at the corners and one out, Marsee hit a high drive against Michael Rucker (0-2) to easily score automatic runner Xavier Edwards.
Cade Gibson (2-0) got three outs in the top half, erasing automatic runner Weston Wilson on his first pitch when he induced a fielder’s-choice grounder to shortstop by Cal Raleigh.
Pinch-hitter Heriberto Hernández led off the eighth for the Marlins with a 422-foot homer to left, his 12th of the season, to tie the game at 5-all. Owen Caissie also hit his 12th for Miami, a solo shot in the second.
RAYS 6, YANKEES 4
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Hunter Feduccia and Yandy Diaz hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning, Ian Seymour struck out 12 and Tampa Bay beat New York.
Victor Mesa Jr. also homered, and Richie Palacios had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Rays, who extended their lead in the AL East over the Yankees to four games.
Seymour (6-1) allowed three runs on five hits without a walk in 5 1/3 innings. Bryan Baker worked a scoreless ninth for his 24th save.
The Yankees struck out 17 times against five Tampa Bay pitchers and became the first American League team whose batters struck out 17 times in consecutive nine-inning games. New York fanned 17 times in a 5-1 win over the Rays on Monday night.
Paul Goldschmidt and Jose Caballero each struck out four times. Goldschmidt is in an 0-for-30 slide. New York’s slumping offense had 11 hits, reaching double digits for the first time since June 17.
ASTROS 6, NATIONALS 3
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jose Altuve homered, Nick Allen drove in a season-high three runs and Houston beat Washington.
Christian Vázquez drove in two for Houston, which has won three of four.
James Wood hit his 25th home run for Washington, which lost for the third time in four games. The Nationals left 11 men on base and were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.
Houston trailed 2-1 before a three-run fourth inning against Andrew Alvarez. After the Astros loaded the bases with one out, Allen slapped a two-run single to left. After Brice Matthews and Allen executed a double steal, Matthews scored on Vázquez’s sacrifice fly.
Vázquez chased Alvarez (2-2) with an RBI single in the sixth. Alvarez allowed five runs on four hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Altuve homered with two outs in the eighth into the visitor’s bullpen, where teammate Bryan Abreu caught it between warmup pitches. It was Altuve’s 10th homer of the year, and his second in two nights.
BREWERS 4, CARDINALS 3 (G1)

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Joey Ortiz homered, Robert Gasser pitched a career-high 7 2/3 innings and Milwaukee beat St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.
Jacob Misiorowski struck out 11 in the first game of the split doubleheader, which was a makeup from May 5, and the Brewers won 4-3.
Milwaukee has won four straight games and seven in a row against St. Louis. The Cardinals lost their fourth straight.
Gasser (2-3) allowed just a two-run homer to Nelson Velázquez. He struck out four, walked one and scattered four hits.
Cooper Pratt gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead with a leadoff triple in the third inning and scored on a Christian Yelich groundout.
Luis Lara, in his major league debut, got his first hit and RBI with a two-run single that gave the Brewers a 3-0 lead in the fifth.
Milwaukee broke it open with seven runs against Cardinals reliever Jared Shuster in the seventh. Ortiz started the outburst with a solo homer and Brice Turang, Gary Sánchez, Jackson Chourio and Pratt followed with RBI hits.
ROYALS 16, METS 12
NEW YORK (AP) -- Tyler Tolbert tied a major league record with hits in 12 consecutive plate appearances, finishing 5-for-6 on Tuesday night and powering Kansas City to a wild, comeback win over the New York.
Batting ninth, the right fielder hit a two-run homer in the second inning and singled in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. Tolbert’s last three hits were infield hits. He flied out in the ninth.
Tolbert matched the record set by Chicago’s Johnny Kling in 1902 and equaled by Walt Dropo of the Detroit Tigers in 1952.
Rookie A.J. Ewing homered and reached base in all five plate appearances for the Mets, going 4 for 4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Juan Soto hit his 20th homer, a three-run shot.
RED SOX 8, WHITE SOX 1
CHICAGO (AP) -- Payton Tolle allowed two hits in six shutout innings, Andruw Monasterio and Ceddanne Rafaela homered and Boston beat Chicago.
Boston (41-48) has won four in a row and nine of its last 11 to close within seven games of .500 for the first time since May 23.
Tolle (5-6) struck out six and walked one, throwing 61 of his 90 pitches for strikes.
Danny Coulombe allowed Chicago’s run in the seventh and left with one out and runners on the corners. Justin Slaten struck out pinch-hitter Jacob Gonzalez and Tristan Peters to keep it 4-1.
Garrett Whitlock pitched a scoreless eighth and Ryan Watson struck out two in the ninth to close it out.
RANGERS 8, ANGELS 3
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Alejandro Osuna hit a three-run homer during a five-run eighth inning and Texas pulled away for a win over Los Angeles.
Osuna’s first homer of the season followed RBI singles by Ezequiel Duran and Justin Foscue in the six-hit inning off Sam Bachman (1-2). Foscue also hit a pinch-hit home run in the seventh, tying the score 3-3.
Peyton Gray (4-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win for the Rangers, who pulled within one-half game of first-place Seattle in the AL West.
The last-place Angels have lost seven consecutive games, tying their longest losing streak of the season.
PADRES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 1
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Jake Cronenworth’s three-run home run off Zac Gallen capped a four-run first inning and San Diego beat Arizona Diamondbacks for just their second victory in 11 games.
The Padres pulled back into a tie for second place in the NL West with the Diamondbacks, who opened the night 14 games behind the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The Diamondbacks won the series opener 8-0 on Monday night, when they held San Diego to eight singles while hitting two home runs.
The Padres had lost eight straight games before winning 5-2 at Dodger Stadium on Sunday night.
BLUE JAYS 9, GIANTS 3
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Jonatan Clase hit his first home run of the season, Ernie Clement had three hits, and Toronto beat San Francisco.
Sean Keys drove in two runs during a five-run third inning to help the Blue Jays end a three-game skid. Clase, Keys and Brandon Valenzuela had two hits each.
Heliot Ramos and Luis Arraez had two hits apiece for the Giants.
ROCKIES 4, DODGERS 3
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Shohei Ohtani hit his 300th career homer but two errors by Los Angeles in the eighth inning led to three runs by Colorado, who rallied for a victory.
Pitching with a 3-1 lead, reliever Will Klein (3-3) had a potential inning-ending double play ball that turned into a run-scoring error by shortstop Miguel Rojas. Then the Rockies turned a squeeze play into two more runs to take a 4-3 lead when Rojas misplayed a throw to third.
Tyler Freeman grounded into a fielder’s choice to Rojas, scoring Kyle Karros, who walked.
Jake McCarthy hit a sacrifice bunt to third against reliever Jack Dreyer. Cole Carrigg, who singled, scored on second baseman Alex Freeland’s throwing error that also brought home Freeman.
The Dodgers had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position when Freeland singled and stole second against reliever Jordan Romano and pinch-hitter Teoscar Hernandez walked. But Ohtani popped up to third, Andy Pages flied out to right and Freddie Freeman went down swinging to end the game.
