Yankees topple Guardians to complete sweep

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Jazz Chisolm Jr. drove in three runs, Carlos Rodón shook off a leadoff homer to pitch six solid innings and the New York Yankees completed a three-game sweep over Cleveland by beating the Guardians 8-4 on Wednesday.
José Caballero had two RBIs as the Yankees stopped Cleveland’s streak of not being swept at 31 consecutive series, ending the longest current stretch in the AL. The Guardians hadn’t been swept since losing three to Texas in August 2025.
Chisolm, who homered in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s win after some Cleveland fans taunted him with “over-rated!” chants, tripled in two runs in the first off rookie Parker Messick (6-3).
New York improved to 11-4 since May 24 and swept the Guardians at Progressive Field for the first time since 2007.
Cleveland has dropped six of seven.
Rodón (2-2) gave up a homer to Angel Martinez on his second pitch before settling in. The left-hander allowed four hits while improving to 11-5 in his career vs. Cleveland. It was only his sixth start since undergoing offseason elbow surgery.
The Yankees broke a 3-all tie with three runs in the sixth to chase Messick.
Trent Grisham tripled with one out after successfully challenging a called third strike. Caballero followed with a foul fly to left and Grisham scored ahead of David Fry’s off-target throw home with an evasive headfirst slide.
Chisolm’s two-run triple highlighted a three-run second when the Yankees capitalized on two Guardians errors.
With a runner at first, Messick fielded Caballero’s bunt but threw wildly past first. Chisolm followed with a liner off the base of the wall in right before scoring when second baseman Travis Bazzana botched a grounder.
Up next: Guardians RHP Tanner Bibee (1-7) starts Friday’s opener of a three-game home series against Detroit.
RAYS 7, RED SOX 5
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Drew Rasmussen struck out a career-high 13 and two-hit the Boston Red Sox over seven scoreless innings, leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 7-5 victory Wednesday.
Nick Fortes, Yandy Díaz and Taylor Walls had multiple hits for the Rays, who swept the Red Sox for the first time since 2023.
Rasmussen (6-2) fanned his first four hitters, faced the minimum through four innings and didn’t allow a runner to reach third base. Boston’s 1-4 batters were a combined 0 for 11 with 11 strikeouts against the Tampa Bay righty, who left with a 5-0 lead.
Boston then jumped on the Rays’ bullpen with a four-run eighth, including Ceddanne Rafaela’s three-run homer. Caleb Durbin also homered in the frame to put the Red Sox on the board.
But Fortes answered with his fourth hit, matching a career high, and Cedric Mullins hit a two-run homer off Boston reliever Justin Slaten. Garrett Cleavinger pitched the ninth for his second save, despite surrendering another homer to Durbin.
The small-ball Rays scored in the third when Fortes doubled off the wall, Mullins’ sacrifice bunt moved Fortes to third and Taylor Walls scored him on a sacrifice fly.
Tampa Bay used three infield hits -- including an Austin Slater RBI double off the leg of Boston starter Jake Bennett (1-2) -- to score three in the fifth.
Díaz, who had three hits and two RBIs, extended the longest on-base streak in the majors to 24 games.
The Rays are 12-0 against the AL East at Tropicana Field, the majors’ longest season-opening home streak against division opponents since 2009.
REDS 5, PADRES 3
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Cincinnati rookie Sal Stewart hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the 11th inning and the Reds snapped their five-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.
The 22-year-old Stewart drove his 13th homer to center field off Yuki Matsui (0-1) and then gleefully celebrated all the way around the bases. The Reds hung on for just their third win in 12 games after their bullpen escaped the last of several late jams.
Both teams scored in the 10th. Eugenio Suárez led off with an RBI double that ended his 2-for-26 slump for Cincinnati, but Samad Taylor drove an RBI single up the middle for the Padres.
Tejay Antone (1-0) got out of the 10th one night after his rough outing in the Reds’ 6-2 loss. Zach Maxwell got three straight outs in the 11th, earning his first career save.
Fernando Tatis Jr. had four hits and scored the 500th run of his career for the Padres, who have lost 12 of 15 after stranding 13 runners -- including seven between the sixth and ninth innings. Jackson Merrill had an early RBI triple for San Diego, which still hasn’t won back-to-back games since May 22-23.
The Padres loaded the bases with one out in the ninth on three singles, but Sam Moll struck out Manny Machado and Gavin Sheets.
Lucas Giolito issued five walks while only getting through four innings for the Padres. The veteran yielded just two singles and one earned run, but committed an error that allowed another run.
Chase Burns pitched six-hit ball into the sixth for Cincinnati, striking out seven.
Xander Bogaerts missed his bobblehead night at Petco Park because he was welcoming a much more important miniature version of himself: He went on paternity leave.
DODGERS 12, PIRATES 3
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Andy Pages hit a two-run homer and added a sacrifice fly during a seventh-inning outburst against Pittsburgh’s bullpen as the Dodgers quickly pulled away once Pirates ace Paul Skenes exited in a 12-3 win on Tuesday night.
Skenes, the reigning NL Cy Young winner, allowed two runs and struck out seven in six innings. He retired Los Angeles star Shohei Ohtani all three times he faced the four-time MVP, getting Ohtani to ground out twice and fanning him once in his best start in nearly a month.
When Skenes left, the Dodgers pounced.
Dalton Rushing led off the seventh with a single off Wilber Dotel (1-0), advanced to third on a single through the hole by Alan Freeland and scored the go-ahead run when Pirates catcher Henry Davis’ attempt to pick Rushing off third hit the Dodger catcher instead and rolled away.
Things only got better for Los Angeles. Ohtani followed with an RBI-double and Pages hit his fourth home run in 12 career games against the Pirates to make it 6-2. A throwing error by Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe, a couple of bases-loaded walks, and Freddie Freeman’s 2,500th career hit -- a sharp RBI-single to center -- highlighted the rest of Los Angeles’ biggest inning since an 11-run outburst against St. Louis on June 2, 2021.
Will Klein (2-2) picked up the win in relief of starter Eric Laurer, who allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Bryan Reynolds and Ryan O’Hearn hit back-to-back homers in the first to give Pittsburgh some early momentum. Pittsburgh managed just three hits the rest of the way to drop its fourth straight game and fall back to just one game over .500 at 34-33.
Skenes is now 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA over his last five starts.
