Eighth-inning outburst pushes Guardians past Mariners
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Rhys Hoskins had a two-run double down the left-field line during a five-run eighth inning and the Cleveland Guardians rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
The Guardians trailed 4-1 before their comeback. It is their third victory in 36 games in which they have trailed after seven innings.
Chase DeLauter, who was activated from the injured list before the game, had two hits and two RBIs.
Victor Robles had two hits and three stolen bases for Seattle, which scored more than three runs for the first time in 14 games. The right fielder is the first Seattle player since Dylan Moore in 2024 to have three stolen bases in a game.
Cleveland sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth. Brayan Rocchio led off the inning with a hit and scored on Daniel Schneemann’s single up the middle off Michael Rucker (0-1).
DeLauter -- who missed two weeks because of a fractured rib on his right side -- tied the game with a two-run single to center.
Hoskins, who came into the game in the seventh inning, then laced a double that hit the chalk on the left-field line for the go-ahead hit. DeLauter appeared to be out at home, but Seattle catcher Mitch Garver was unable to hold on to the ball while trying to make the tag.
Seattle got within one run with two outs in the ninth when Cole Young scored after Cleveland’s Travis Bazzana committed a throwing error. The Mariners had runners on second and third with two outs, but J.P. Crawford grounded out as Cade Smith held on for his 26th save.
Matt Festa (2-1) got the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
It is the first series the Guardians have won since seven-time All-Star third baseman José Ramírez went on the IL June 14 because of a broken bone in his left hand.
ROYALS 5, WHITE SOX 4
CHICAGO (AP) -- Carter Jensen extended his franchise-record rookie hitting streak to 19 games and five Kansas City Royals relievers held the Chicago White Sox scoreless for five innings to end a four-game losing streak with a 5-4 win Sunday.
Jensen went 3 for 5 with two RBIs to extend the longest active streak in MLB, now the longest by an American League rookie since 2014.
The Royals (35-50) were outscored 24-2 in the first two games of the series but avoided their seventh sweep of the season.
Miguel Vargas homered and doubled for the White Sox (43-39), who fell to 17-10 in one-run games.
After starter Luinder Avila gave up four runs in four innings, Royals relievers Steven Cruz (2-2), Beck Way, Lucas Erceg, Matt Strahm and Alex Lange combined to allow only two baserunners over the final five, with Lange pitching a perfect ninth for his seventh save. The Royals have an MLB-high 22 blown-lead losses this season.
Jensen’s RBI single scored Lane Thomas in the top of the first to extend his streak. The White Sox answered in the bottom of the inning on Vargas’ 19th home run, a two-run shot 407 feet into the wind to left.
Thomas drove home Collins with a single and Bobby Witt Jr. scored Tyler Tolbert on a sacrifice fly in the second. The Sox responded again in the bottom half on Kyle Teel’s two-run, broken-bat single to left.
Collins’ bloop double in the third tied the score 4-4.
Jensen’s second hit, a double into the right-field corner in the fourth, put the Royals in the lead for good and chased White Sox starter Anthony Kay (6-3) after 3 2/3 innings. Kay had been unbeaten at home (5-0) this season.
RAYS 5, D-BACKS 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Junior Caminero homered in a career-best fourth consecutive game, Drew Rasmussen threw six shutout innings and the Tampa Bay Rays finished a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 5-1 victory Sunday.
Cedric Mullins and Ben Williamson added solo home runs for Tampa Bay, which has won five consecutive games and went 7-3 on its homestand. The series sweep was the eighth of the season by the Rays.
Caminero has six home runs during his four-game homer streak - including three against Kansas City on Thursday -- and has seven in his last six games overall. A 463-foot shot to left-center field in the fifth inning on Sunday put Tampa Bay in front 4-0.
Rasmussen (7-4) allowed three hits, struck out five and hit two batters to finish June allowing a total of three runs allowed over 33 innings in five starts. Craig Kimbrel, Garrett Cleavinger and Trevor Martin combined to allow one run and two hits in relief.
CARDINALS 2, MARLINS 1
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Bryan Torres hit a two-run homer to back Kyle Leahy’s stingy start as the St. Louis Cardinals cooled off the Miami Marlins with a 2-1 victory Sunday that snapped a four-game skid.
Masyn Winn led off the second inning with a single against Tyler Phillips (1-3) and Torres followed with his third home run for a 2-0 lead.
Leahy (6-4) didn’t allow a hit until Owen Caissie and Graham Paulie had back-to-back doubles to begin the fifth, cutting it to 2-1. Leahy allowed one run on two hits with three walks in five innings.
JoJo Romero got four outs and Ryne Stanek induced an inning-ending double play in the seventh. George Soriano struck out two in a perfect eighth and Riley O’Brien retired the side in order in the ninth for his 20th save in 24 opportunities.
PHILLIES 5, METS 4
NEW YORK (AP) -- Kyle Schwarber became the first major leaguer to reach 30 homers this season with a two-run shot in the seventh inning that sent the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 win over the New York Mets on Sunday.
The Phillies squandered an early 3-0 lead and fell behind 4-3 before Schwarber hit a 408-foot drive to center field off Kodai Senga (0-7), who was making the first regular-season relief appearance of his big league career.
Schwarber connected in Philadelphia’s 84th game -- the fastest anyone has reached 30 homers in franchise history. He has six straight 30-homer seasons, the longest active streak in the majors, and eight overall -- most among active players.
Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm and Brandon Marsh all had third-inning RBIs for the Phillies.
Kyle Backhus (1-0) got the final two outs in the sixth. Jhoan Duran threw a hitless ninth for his 21st save.
Philadelphia starter Jesús Luzardo allowed one run and struck out six in five innings.
RANGERS 3, BLUE JAYS 2
TORONTO (AP) -- Pinch-runner Jarred Kelenic scored the tiebreaking run by racing home from second base on a wild pitch in the ninth inning, and the Texas Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Sunday to complete a four-game sweep.
Josh Jung hit a two-out double off Louis Varland (3-3) in the ninth and Kelenic came in to run.
Varland’s first pitch to Corey Seager bounced in front of the plate and ricocheted off Alejandro Kirk’s mitt. The catcher initially couldn’t find the ball, allowing Kelenic to come all the way around with the decisive run.
Cole Winn (3-2) pitched two innings for the win and Tyler Alexander finished for his fourth save in five chances.
TWINS 3, ROCKIES 2
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Connor Prielipp struck out a career-high 10 in six innings, Ryan Kreidler hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh and the Minnesota Twins edged the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Sunday.
Prielipp allowed two runs and six hits before being relieved by Andrew Morris (4-2), who struck out two in 1 1/3 hitless innings to earn the win. Yoendrys Gómez worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning on four pitches for his eighth save.
Kody Clemens also homered, Brooks Lee had two singles and Royce Lewis and Trevor Larnach each doubled for Minnesota, which had eight hits overall. The Twins only struck out once.
NATIONALS 6, ORIOLES 4
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Luis García Jr. homered twice and drove in five runs to lead the Washington Nationals to a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
Pete Alonso and Jackson Holliday each hit a two-run homer for the Orioles, but after Zack Littell (7-6) allowed two runs and three hits in five innings, a maligned Washington bullpen held on. PJ Poulin worked two hitless innings for his third save.
Alonso hit a 437-foot home run in the first and Kyle Bradish (5-8) retired the first eight Washington hitters. But the right-hander walked five of the next 11 men he faced before being pulled.
