PARKERSBURG – On Friday, the Parkersburg South Patriots rolled to a 56-20 win over the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles at Erickson All-Sports Facility.
South's Gage Wright opened up the scoring with a 55-yard rushing touchdown at the 9:31 mark in the first quarter. The unsuccessful point after attempt made the score 6-0.
Woodrow Wilson responded in the second quarter with a 22-yard pass connection from Devin Richardson to Elijah Waller. The Patriots were able to block the extra point kick, tying up the score at 6.
After letting the Flying Eagles tie things up, South went on a tear for the rest of the first half. Wright scored his second touchdown of the night on a 3-yard run. He got a hat trick after running in a fumble from 54 yards out for the scoop-and-score. On the run, Wright had to kick his foot out of his own shoe to free himself from the defender that had latched on to him. Wright scored his fourth touchdown of the night, this time through the air, on a 22-yard pass from Turner Garretson. This brought the score to 28-6 at the half.
After the half, Wright continued his onslaught. Just 36 seconds into the third quarter, Wright caught a 25-yard pass from Garretson in the end zone to make it 35-6 after James Thompson's successful extra point attempt. A few minutes later, someone finally scored for South whose name is not Gage Wright. Eli Bartley found paydirt on a 2-yard run, making it 41-6 after the unsuccessful conversion attempt.
Near the end of the third quarter, Wright scored his sixth and final touchdown of the night on a 29-yard run. At about the halfway point of the fourth quarter, Bartley scored his second touchdown of the night on a 9-yard run, bringing the Patriots up to 56 points.
Woodrow Wilson tacked on a couple of touchdowns late in the fourth that brough the final deficit down significantly. First, Christian Stewart popped off a 51-yard run for six. After a successful onside kick attempt, the Flying Eagles scored again on a 10-yard run by Andre Thomas. These scores made the final 56-20.
Wright finished the game with 10 carries for 133 yards, two catches for 47 yards and six touchdowns (three rushing, two receiving and one off the scoop-and-score).
South head coach Nathan Tanner had plenty to say about his continued dominance, "He does what he does. He had some plays tonight, I would call them timely plays. That forced fumble and the scoop-and-score, he fought out of two tackles and the kid ripped his shoe off and he scored without his shoe on. Big run there. The first drive that we had the ball, they stuffed us two three plays in a row. Then, the guys up front blocked it well, then he hit the crease, we had a good downfield block, and he busted it wide open. I can't say enough. Great back, great defensive player, just all-around. He's been a beast."
Parkersburg South improved to 3-0 and will take on their in-city rivals, the undefeated Parkersburg Big Reds, next week at Stadium Field. Coach Tanner said of their upcoming opponent, "They're a good football team. They're 3-0, and their kids are gonna be excited, our kids are gonna be excited. It's a really cool atmosphere to be able to be a part of. As a team, we're thrilled to be in the position we are. We just need to keep getting better. We're gonna have to play really really well in all three phases to come out victorious against them. Coach Kimes, he does a good job over there, and they're gonna be ready to play."
