GLENVILLE – Glenville State first-year head coach Jake Casteel’s program held a 16-14 halftime lead here Saturday afternoon at Morris Stadium, but West Virginia State quarterback Joe Dailey’s 54-yard touchdown run early in the third put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good as the visitors left town with a 24-19 Mountain East Conference victory.
GSU (1-8, 0-6), which will try to snap a seven-game slide next Saturday afternoon at Wheeling, received a third straight 300-plus yard performance from quarterback JD Sherrod.
Sherrod, who hit 26 of 49 attempts for 311 yards but was picked off once each by Julian Whitfield and Trevyn Smith, threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Landon Frey to give GSU a 10-7 lead early in the second. Devin Cox, who had 17 carries for a game-high 104 yards, put the Jackets on the board first with a 33-yard scoring scamper that was answered by a Brody Layman 26-yard field goal.
The Pioneers fell behind 14-10 after Dailey’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Malik Baker, who had six receptions for a game-high 114 yards. However, two short field goals from Layman put GSU up by two at the break.
WVSU (4-5, 2-4), which heads next Saturday to Frostburg State, increased its lead to 24-16 via a Joseph Shrader 41-yard field goal late in the third. GSU’s only points after halftime was another Layman short field goal.
