Yellowjackets continue dominance, roll past Dots 42-7

By Mike Morrison 5 min read

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Last Friday night against Marietta, the Williamstown Yellowjackets scored a pair of touchdowns in the first two minutes of the game and never looked back as they rolled to a 42-7 win over the Tigers.

Friday night on homecoming night in Williamstown it took the 'Jackets a whopping three minutes to score their first two touchdowns of the game against Poca and once again they rolled to a lopsided 57-7 win over the Dots.

The 'Jackets were simply no match at all for the Dots as they scored four touchdowns in the first six minutes of the game and led 36-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Just like last week the 'Jackets defense got things going by forcing an early turnover.

On the second play from scrimmage Poca quarterback Dalton Bragg was hit by a host of WHS defenders forcing him to fumble the ball.

Colin Jones alertly picked up the loose ball and ran 8-yards into the end zone to give the 'Jackets the lead with just 49 seconds off of the game clock.

After forcing the Dots into a three-and-out on their next possession the 'Jackets got the ball in great field position as JP Strobl returned the punt 19 yards to the Poca 11-yard line.

Two plays later 'Jacket sophomore running back Daniel Cunningham scored on a 6-yard run for the second score of the game with 8:56 remaining in the first quarter.

The 'Jackets defense rose to the occasion again on the next Poca possession as senior Christian Hoosier batted a Bragg pass into the air before intercepting it to give Williamstown possession of the ball again at the Poca 16-yard line.

Once again it would take the powerful 'Jacket offense just two plays to strike gold as Cunningham scored again on a 2-yard plunge to increase their lead to 22-0 with 7:38 to play in the opening quarter.

It took the 'Jackets less than a minute to strike yet again as the defense scored for the second time of the quarter when Cunningham intercepted a Bragg pass and returned it 33-yards for another score.

After yet another interception on the next Poca possession gave the 'Jackets possession of the football deep in Dot territory they struck for the fifth time in the opening quarter and once again it would be Cunningham closing the deal as he scored on an 18-yard run.

While the defense and running game did all the damage in the opening quarter, the 'Jackets passing game took over in the second as they completely blew things wide open.

Junior quarterback Breck Allen fired three touchdown passes in the first seven and a half minutes of the second quarter before head coach Chris Beck emptied the benches and rested most of his starters before the opening half was complete.

Allen first found none other than Cunningham on a 41-yard pass and run before finding a wide open Mason Kern on a 40-yard touchdown pass with still over nine minutes to play in the opening half.

The 'Jackets scored what would be their final touchdown of the game when Tyrell Miller took a shovel pass from Allen and rambled 26-yards for yet another Williamstown score and a 57-0 lead with still 4:42 to play in the half.

With the huge lead it was decided prior to the start of the second half to reduce the time of the final two quarters to eight minutes instead of 12 to go along with the running clock.

The Dots avoided the shutout when Rylan Lett scored a five-yard touchdown with less than a minute to play.

The 'Jacket defense forced four turnovers in the game and held Poca to just 86 total yards of offense as they improved to a perfect 6-0 on the season.

The huge lead allowed Beck to get playing time for a whole bunch of kids as 13 different Williamstown rushers had at least one carry.

Allen finished the game 9-for-10 with 139 yards and the three touchdowns.

WHS kicker Carter Hoops was a perfect 7-for-7 on point after kicks.

The loss dropped Poca's season mark to a disappointing 1-6.

The 'Jackets will look to remain perfect next week when they play host to South Harrison.
