GLENVILLE -- Following an early 7-7 tie here Saturday afternoon in the first quarter at Morris Stadium, visiting Frostburg State scored the final 28 points of the half and turned a 35-7 intermission advantage on Hall of Fame weekend into a 56-7 Mountain East Conference road win.
The Pioneers (1-5, 0-3) of first-year head coach Jake Casteel had a pair of turnovers in the opening half as the Bobcats held a 345-197 advantage in total yards that turned into a 566-212 edge at the final horn.
GSU, which returns to action at 2 p.m. next Saturday at Concord, also was flagged five times for 45 yards in the opening 30 minutes.
FSU quarterback Peyton Murphy had quite the opening half to remember as he completed all 13 of his attempts for 222 yards and three touchdowns. He finished 19 of 21 for 285 yards.
Murphy fired a pair of touchdowns to Caleb Barnes (14, 64) and one to Tra’Shaun Timmons (49), while tailback KJ Smothers found the end zone twice by halftime on runs of 13 and 40 yards as he had eight totes for 73 stripes at the break while finishing with game-highs of 12 carries for 84 yards.
The hosts answered Barnes’ 14-yard score on the first series of the game by getting a 24-yard TD strike from JD Sherrod to Kyree Bunny as Brody Layman’s extra point answered the first of eight Tyler Cook conversions. The drive started at the Bobcat 29 after Caden Harris, who had three catches for 81 yards, returned the kickoff 71 yards.
Following the 49-yard score by Timmons, the Pioneers missed a 40-yard field goal attempt and two plays later it was 21-7 with 6:39 remaining in the first when Barnes had his 64-yard score.
Despite getting across midfield on the ensuing drive, Sherrod was picked off by Ramal West and that led to Smothers’ first touchdown.
Following a 35-yard missed field goal by the hosts, Smothers broke off his 40-yarder to set the halftime score.
Frostburg State (3-3, 2-2) had a chance to add on before the break after Osman Fanny recovered a fumble, but Cook’s 23-yard field goal was no good.
Murphy’s fourth touchdown pass of the game at 6:23 of the third, a 13-yarder to Timmons, put the Pioneers in a 42-7 hole entering the fourth.
Brett Patterson and Joe Hayes each tacked on 5-yard scoring jaunt in the fourth as the Bobcats finished with 271 yards rushing on 51 attempts while holding the Pioneers to 62 on 25 carries.
Sherrod led GSU with 28 rushing yards and completed 10 of 18 for 147 yards.
Barnes finished with four receptions for a game-high 107 yards while Timmons had a game-high five catches for 75 yards.
Former Parkersburg South Patriot Eli Bartley made his offensive debut for the Pioneers and carried twice for 6 yards.
The Bobcats will look to climb above the .500 mark when Charleston invades at 1 p.m. next Saturday for homecoming.
