Cabell Midland races past PHS, 49-0

By Dave Walsh 3 min read

ONA - Cabell Midland's football team got the message from coach Eric Fetty.

"Been harping on fast start, fast start," Fetty said. "Lately we've been slow getting started. The kids responded."

Andrew LaFon carried twice for 58 yards on the Knights’ first possession, getting the score on a 38-yard run. That started Cabell Midland on the way to the win, 49-0, to make it a happy homecoming for the Knights. Most of the second half was played with a running clock.

"We executed," Knights quarterback Logan Shull said. "The receivers made great plays. Andrew just runs hard."

For all the offense, Fetty enjoyed seeing his defense post a shutout.

"We struggled for a couple of weeks," Fetty said. "The coaches worked their butts off. We stopped the run well."

Shull threw three TD passes and LaFon ran for three. Shull and Mason Bryant proved the Knights had three weapons to contain.

"Logan gives us the run-pass option," Fetty said. "They tried to take some things away and we added a few things."

The Knights started the second half recovering an onside kick. The last score came when Carson Christian had a 66-yard TD after catching a tunnel screen pass from Shull.

"We saw the opportunity. It was a good time to try it," Fetty said of the onside kick. "Mason’s a good receiver and hard to beat."

Cabell Midland (6-1) takes on John Marshall next week at home. Then it's the Shield Game against rival Huntington High.

"One game at a time," Fetty said. "Enjoy this and get ready for next week. One game at a time.”

LaFon ran for 101 yards and booted all seven extra points. Shull went 10 of 12 for 193 yards.

Parkersburg managed just 27 yards on the ground and 63 through the air.

In the first half, LaFon ran for two scores and Shull threw a pair of TD passes for a 28-0 lead at the half for the Knights.

After scoring on the first possession, LaFon added an 8-yard TD run in the second for a 14-0 lead.

Shull then struck through the air for Cabell Midland. Shull, a lefty, hit Rajan Thompson on a 25-yard TD pass.

Right before the half, Shull found Keian Shelton for 34 yards and a score. He caught the ball down the middle and then worked past a couple of defenders for the Big Reds for a 28-0 lead at the half.

Shull gained 94 yards rushing and Shull hit on 6 of 8 passes for 106 yards.

Parkersburg mounted no serious scoring threats in the first half.
