SSAC State Girls Golf Tourney held at Woodridge

MINERAL WELLS -- An inauspicious start didn't prevent the defending girls state golf champion from staying in the moment and closing out her high school career as a four-time, all-tournament selection.

Williamstown senior Madilyn Buttrey posted a quadruple bogey on the first hole during Tuesday's modified WVSSAC State Girls Golf Tournament at The Links at Woodridge. She played her final 17 holes at 4-over par and closed out with an 80 to place seventh on the leaderboard.

"That first hole was just nerves," Buttrey said. "After that, I was like, 'You are OK Madilyn. Just keep going.' It was just the first hole. Last year, I ended up having a great back nine so I thought I still have 17 more holes.

"But you know, it's OK. It just wasn't my day. I'm just happy I made the all-tournament. I made it all four years, so that's a pretty big accomplishment."

Another local golfer kept her perfect streak intact as Wirt County sophomore Kate Dotson repeated as an all-tournament selection and placed eighth with an 81. While Buttrey tried to play catch-up after the first hole, Dotson took advantage with a birdie to open her round.

"I was really excited to start off well on the first hole," Dotson said. "I just tried to keep it together going forward and just kind of playing steady and just as well as I could.

"Coming in, I didn't really have super high expectations. I just really wanted to put up a good score."

Setting the pace for the right all-tourney selections by a landslide was Wheeling Park freshman Ellie West, who fired a 6-under 66 with one eagle, four birdies and 13 pars. No bogeys on the card.

After turning in par on the first four holes of her round, West knocked her second shot to within 30 yards on the par 5, fifth hole. Her pitch shot rolled straight at the cup and settled on the pin. When she walked up to the hole, she carefully pulled the pin out to allow the ball to drop and give her an eagle.

West took the lead to stay at 2-under then blazed a path through the back nine at 4-under 33.

"I definitely think that eagle gave me a little boost," said West, who surpassed her previous best 18-hole total by three strokes. "Throughout the round, I made sure to stay clam, keep my head in the game. I never got ahead of myself. I always thought just fairway, green, two-putt - one-putt would be great.

"Not to bogey a hole, that is absolutely wonderful. To reach that accomplishment for me is very good."

West planned to celebrate her title in usual fashion.

"Ice cream - a twist cone with extra sprinkles," West said. "I do that every single time."

Rounding out the all-tourney team were Morgantown's Angela Yao (74), Bridgeport's Audrey Kerr (75), Lewis County's Makenzie Egress (76), Hurricane's Chastyn Viars (78), Capital's Alexis Green (78) and George Washington's Kamryn Stutler (81)

Of the six schools who fielded a full girls team, Morgantown and George Washington tied for first place at 257. Wheeling Park followed in third place with 263, while Parkersburg (score unavailable) took fourth. University (281) and Herbert Hoover (291) rounded out the list.

Parkersburg freshman Katie Ann LeMaster led the Big Reds with an 87, while Camille Tatterson carded a 96. Aubree Conzo was 17-over par through 17 holes, while Athenea Staats finished at 131.

"Today was a bittersweet moment just because it's the last girls state and maybe the last time I will ever play with those girls who were in my group," Buttrey said. "At regionals, hopefully I will have a better round - because regionals are here at this course."
