MT. ZION -- Calhoun County celebrated Homecoming on Friday by capturing its first 2-0 start since 2015.
The Red Devils were unstoppable on the ground, finishing with 408 yards on 58 carries en route to a 63-42 win over Richwood.
Trevor Mayle led CCHS, which travels to Wirt County next week, with 197 yards and five touchdowns on 24 carries. He also threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Chase Schoolcraft. Rome Riddle added 80 yards and two TDs on 15 attempts, Schoolcraft finished with 56 yards on nine totes and Gavin Hicks chipped in 45 yards and a score on just three rushes. For good measure, Ezra Anderson contributed 31 yards on five carries.
It was the Fawks O'Dell show for Richwood (0-2), as the running back amassed 182 yards and three TDs on 21 carries while also scoring on a 45-yard pass from Grady Hall and an 85-yard kick return. Hall also threw a touchdown strike to Parker Giles from 48 yards out.
Calhoun led 15-6 after one, 28-20 at halftime and 50-34 after three.
Fort Frye 29, Wheeling Central 27
WHEELING -- Grady Hesson kicked a 32-yard field goal, threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Tullius and ran for a 1-yard score in the second half to help Fort Frye rally for a 29-27 win over Wheeling Central Friday.
The Cadets, who improved to 3-0 and play host to rival Waterford next week, trailed 21-13 at halftime against the defending W.Va. Class A state champions, but outscored the Maroon Knights 16-6 over the final two quarters.
Hesson finished with 35 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries while completing 7 of 12 pass attempts for 171 yards and two scores. Tytan Waller caught a 33-yard TD while Tullius finished with 94 yards on three receptions. Gavin Rauch led the FFHS ground attack with 73 yards on 11 carries while Sam Bricker added 58 yards on 10 rushes.
Defensively, Aydric Wynn had an interception for the Cadets.
Central quarterback Nico Kusic ran for 185 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. Dustin Sanner found the end zone once, finishing with 10 rushes for 145 yards.
Braxton County 26, Gilmer County 8
GLENVILLE -- Josh Hoover and Logan Payne both had pick-sixes to help Braxton County defeat Gilmer County 26-8 Friday.
The Titans (0-2) out-gained the Eagles (1-1) 206-160, but Braxton came up with the big play when it needed them.
Brady Toler's 8-yard touchdown run got things started in the first quarter, and Hoover's 27-yard interception return made it 12-0 at halftime.
Gilmer, which is off next week before heading to Wirt County on Sept. 18, cut the deficit with an Ashton Hamric 12-yard touchdown run, but Braxton punched back on Toler's 36-yard TD pass to Jackson Lewis on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 18-8.
The final scoring play came with 3:07 remaining when Payne took an interception 56 yards to the house to ice the game.
Remington Huffman led all rushers with 129 yards on 31 carries for Gilmer. Payne led Braxton, which plays host to Midland Trail next week, with 60 yards on 10 carries.
Wirt County 34, Magnolia 12
NEW MARTINSVILLE -- Dylan Hutchinson scored a pair of defensive touchdowns to help lift Wirt County past Magnolia 34-12 Friday.
Hutchinson had a 45-yard pick-six in the first quarter and recovered a fumble in the end zone in the fourth. Andrew Lemley, who caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Like Hickman for the first points of the game, also returned an interception 80 yards to the house in the second.
Ashton Skelley, who finished with 125 yards on 13 carries, accounted for both Magnolia touchdowns.
The Tigers (1-1) play host to Calhoun County next week while the Blue Eagles (0-2) visit River.
Athens 38, Marietta 10
THE PLAINS, Ohio -- A 24-point third quarter turned the tide in Athens' 38-10 win over Marietta Friday night at Joe Burrow Stadium.
The Tigers, who fell to 0-3 with a trip to Watkins Memorial slated for next week, led 10-7 at halftime but watched the Bulldogs (2-1) use a 24-0 run to go up 31-10 at the end of three.
The Tigers got on the board first on Trenton McVey's 10-yard touchdown run with 10:36 left in the second quarter.
With 4:12 to go until halftime, Athens knotted the score on Briar Thomas' 24-yard touchdown pass to Blake Taylor.
Marietta took the lead on the final play of the first half courtesy of Kingston McMahon's 22-yard field goal. A 23-yard pass play from Trenton McVey to Daymeon Gulley moved the ball to the 12 to set up the kick to make it 10-7 at halftime.
Athens got the ball first in the second half and quickly tied the score on Jack Fisher's 25-yard field goal. On their next possession, the Bulldogs took their first lead of the night on Luke Pero's 7-yard touchdown run. That made it 17-10 at the 8:24 mark of the third.
AHS extended its lead on a pair of touchdown passes from Thomas to Cohen Stalder and Taylor, stretching the lead to 31-10 after three.
The Bulldogs put the final touches on the scoreboard with 3:30 remaining when Thomas threw a TD pass to Tyriq Cunningham, his third scoring strike of the contest.
Roane County 53, Buffalo 21
SPENCER -- In his 16th season at the helm, Roane County head coach Paul Burdette picked up his 100th career victory in the Raiders' 53-21 triumph over Buffalo on Thursday.
Javon Letourneau led RCHS (2-0) with three total touchdowns, including one through the air from Brennen Carpenter, who tossed a pair of TDs. Koltyn Starcher paced Roane with 86 rushing yards. Starcher, Charter Cottrell and Brodey Proctor all had first-half touchdowns.
Finding the end zone twice for the Bison (0-2) was Jacob Cossin.
