WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Marietta College bolted out to a 22-0 lead after one here Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium on Otterbein University’s homecoming as the Pioneers rolled to a 42-7 Ohio Athletic Conference triumph.
The Pioneers (3-1, 2-1) put on a staunch defensive effort as the Cardinals were outgained 449-109, which included just 10 yards rushing on 32 attempts as MC finished with 37 carries for 194 yards with Zion Jackson-Wilborn (11-107) leading the charge.
Joe Tenta was intercepted by Amor Coachman and Carter Sleet, but the MC signal-caller finished 22 of 29 for 265 yards and three touchdowns as the visitors held a 19-8 advantage in first downs.
Marietta College, which returns to action for a 1:30 p.m. kick on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Mount Union, took the lead for good just 5:02 into the affair when Cayden Caroll scored from the 1 and James Cornwell booted the PAT.
For the second straight week, MC linebacker Lukas Ratliff blocked a punt in the end zone for a safety. Later, Tenta delivered scoring strikes of 33 yards to Antwon Johnson and 17 yards to Dalton Miller for the 22-0 cushion.
Otterbein (1-3, 1-2) fell behind 25-0 at the break following a 30-yard field goal by Cornwell, but the hosts finally got on the board at 9:28 of the third on quarterback Kace Kinnamon’s 2-yard touchdown run.
However, the Pioneers answered just 2:04 later when Tenta once again hooked up with Miller for a 26-yard touchdown toss.
Johnson tacked on the final TD via a 1-yard run early in the fourth and Cornwell set the final score following his 23-yard field goal with 7:19 to play.
Miller (6-97), Johnson (4-72) and Chrys Taylor (4-64) were Tenta’s top targets.
Kinnamon completed 10 of 22 attempts for 79 yards. Daniel Shaffer had three receptions for a team-high 55 yards.
The Cardinals, who got a game-high 10 total tackles from Eli Helton, play host at 1:30 p.m. next Saturday to Manchester.
Marietta College’s defense got a sack apiece from Haiden Manns and Taison Starr, who led the Pioneers with five stops and a pair of tackles for loss.
