GLENVILLE -- JD Sherrod threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns here Thursday night as host Glenville State opened the Morris Family Health & Fitness Complex with a 24-21 victory versus Millersville and in the process gave first-year head coach Jake Casteel his first win.
The Pioneers (1-1) scored on their opening drive thanks to a 29-yard field goal by Brody Layman and the Marauders (0-1) fell behind 10-0 early in the second after Sherrod hooked up with Kyree Bunny on an 84-yard scoring strike.
Millersville, which was flagged 13 times for 114 yards compared to GSU's 10 for 93, scored the next two six-pointers to take a 14-10 halftime advantage.
Xavier Kingcade had a 3-yard TD run and then Tommy Hunsicker, who went for game-highs of 17 carries and 129 yards rushing, broke off a 52-yarder with 50 ticks left in the half as the Pioneers trailed by four following another extra point kick from Gryffin Mitstifer.
Millersville's lead was short lived as the G-men responded by scoring on their first drive of the second half.
Caden Harris, who finished with game-highs of seven receptions for 46 yards, had a key 12-yard grab on third down to extend the drive. Two plays later Sherrod and Joziah Gonzalez connected on a 50-yard touchdown completion as Layman's PAT at 12:36 of the third made it 17-14.
Hunsicker, who hit 11 of 23 attempts for 85 yards and was picked off by Knowel Smith, accounted for the final Millersville score just 4:03 later via an 11-yard scoring burst.
The hosts went in front to stay when running back Amir Simmons had a 15-yard TD reception from Sherrod, who connected on 17 of 28 aerials, with 8:34 remaining in the affair.
While Smith finished with a dozen total stops, it was teammate Jacob Clark who led the way for the defense with 14 total tackles. Anthony Bachinksi added a sack for the victors, who received 47 yards rushing on 13 totes from Sherrod and were paced by Zavione Wood (13-55).
The G-men now will have some time off before returning to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Saxon Stadium to square off against Mercyhurst.
