SAN FRANCISCO -- As if he was back home in the Marietta College pinstripes, Turner Hill grinded out an at-bat, got a pitch he liked and drove it on a line for a base hit.
Hill recorded his first major league base knock in the third inning of the Giants' 13-7 loss to the Rockies Sunday afternoon. Saturday, Hill made his major league debut, going 0 for 3 with a run-batted-in.
Starting in left field again, Hill's first at-bat came in the bottom of the second inning with the Giants trailing 4-1. With a runner on first and nobody out, Hill grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice, reaching first base safely. He later went to second on Buddy Kennedy's single.
Two batters later, Hill scored his first MLB run on Drew Gilbert's RBI single to center to cut the deficit to 4-2. Later in the inning, Rafael Devers hit a three-run home run to put San Francisco up 5-4.
Hill was right back up in the third inning, this time with a runner on third and two outs. Hill worked the count full against Rockies starter Gabriel Hughes. On the payoff pitch, Hughes threw a 92 mile-per-hour fastball on the inside edge. Hill got his hands inside the ball and lined it into right field to bring in Osleivis Basabe and make it 6-4.
Hill's father, Steve, was shown on the broadcast cheering with family and friends.
Hill ended up with two more at-bats in the game. After striking out in the fifth inning, the left-hander got an opportunity against reliever Jimmy Herget with the bases empty and two outs in the seventh inning. Hill took a strike before watching two balls go by. After swinging and missing on a breaking pitch, Hill took back-to-back pitches out of the zone to draw his first big-league walk.
Hill was stranded at first, and later the final out of the game was recorded with Hill in the on-deck circle. He finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Giants head to Cleveland for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday.
