Carter, Williams lead 93rd WV Open

DANIELS -- A pair of former Division I golfers from the Mountain State shared the lead at 4-under par following the completion of Wednesday’s first round of the 93rd West Virginia Open contested at Glade Springs Resort.

Ex-West Virginia University golfer Chris Williams and Marshall University graduate Pat Carter, who is a 13-time W.Va. Amateur champion, paced the field by two strokes.

In all, only nine golfers finished in the red as the competitors played on either the Cobb Course or Stonehaven with the top 60 players and ties making the cut on Thursday to Friday’s final round.

A trio of professionals are tied for third after carding respective 2-under par rounds of 70 -- Lucas Cromeenes, David Scragg and Mason Williams.

Parkersburg South graduate Kenny Hess, who won the 2020 event the last time it was held at Glade Springs, currently sits four strokes off the pace after an even par effort of 72. Hess and fellow pro David Bradshaw are among a group of six sitting in a tie for 10th.

“I haven’t played the Cobb at all since I won. I’ve only played the Stonehaven Course now twice, I think,” admitted Hess. “The pro-am on Monday I shot 7-under on the Stonehaven and tied low pro to win some money in that, so I feel good going into it because it’s definitely getable if you hit fairways. It’s a course that you have to keep it on the golf course. If not, you’re not finding your golf ball. Today was playing difficult with the wind. We’re not used to seeing 15 mile an hour wind on the Cobb Course.

“It definitely changed your approach to a lot of tee balls and a lot of approach shots. You had to think differently. I played better than the score I posted. I made a really bad swing on the 16th hole. I mean like the worst swing I’ve made in a tournament in five years and made a double, but other than that swing I would’ve been a quiet 2-under par. I played like I probably should’ve shot six or seven under, so I have a lot of confidence, a lot of plan that I can still go make 14 birdies the next two days and win this thing.”

Wirt County freshman Jude Walker carded a 75 and is tied for 28th along with ex-Parkersburg South Patriot and current WVU Tech golfer Parker Vannoy.

Eight golfers are tied for 32nd after shooting 76 and that includes Ravenswood graduate Alex Easthom, ex-Patriot Ben Palmer and former St. Marys Blue Devil Coleman Lamp.

University of Charleston commit Cameron Fallon, who just graduated at PSHS, shot a 78 and is tied for 49th.
