South baseball falls to GW, 11-1
CHARLESTON — The Patriots won Tuesday night. That would be the George Washington Patriots, picking up a 11-1 win over the Parkersburg South Patriots in the Class AAAA South Region tournament at Floyd Wilcox Field in Charleston.
George Washington scored 10 of its 11 runs between the third and fifth innings, including four in the fourth inning.
Eli Smith and Ryan Anderson hit home runs, with Anderson clubbing a grand slam in the fourth. Anderson’s home run extended GW’s lead to 8-1.
“It was a tight game up until that, then, on two swings, it’s a seven-run swing for us there,” GW coach Mike Davis said. “Those two are back-to-back in our lineup, and it can create a lot of problems. It did tonight because you had to pick one of them. I’m just proud of them. Both of them put good swings on the barrel right there. We took good swings up and down the lineup tonight. Pleased with our offense.”
Smith’s home run in the third inning brought Jon Fala and Joel Nelson home, putting GW up 4-1.
His homer broke a 1-1 tie, which Parkersburg South knotted up at the top of the inning on an RBI single by Logan Graham, scoring Eli Davis.
Anderson’s grand slam scored Fala, Luke Gordon and Jack Kelley. Kelley was inserted as a courtesy runner after Smith was intentionally walked in the fourth, loading the bases for Anderson.
“I gambled. I rolled the dice with walking Smith,” Parkersburg South coach Bryan Youngblood said. “I thought I was making the right move, but when you roll the dice, Anderson is just as capable of doing the same thing. That’s what happened. I’m still kind of brooding over that one.
“Funny thing is, one of my players told me to, ‘Get over it, coach.’ I don’t take my advice very well. GW is a complete ball club.”
George Washington’s win on Tuesday advances it within one victory of the Class AAAA state tournament in Huntington.
Davis has emphasized that GW’s energy stays high throughout the course of a game.
He feels that his Patriots did that on Tuesday and have been doing so for the last several weeks.
“We have a unique ability to be present in the moment while also understanding the big picture of things,” Davis said. “They’ll be ready to go. Any time you can play a closeout game on your home field, which we’ve never gotten the opportunity to do, that’s a big deal. We play really, really well at home. That’s 15 or 16 at home this year. It was a big deal getting the top seed to where we get to host.”
Parkersburg South now falls to the losers bracket, where it awaits the winner of crosstown rival Parkersburg and Woodrow Wilson in a game scheduled for Thursday.
“We’re just going to go back to the basics,” Youngblood said. “It’s the basics in hitting, throwing and catching the ball. This game, more so than any other game, is a game of fundamentals. We just gotta focus on those fundamentals.”
Nelson grounded out in the bottom of the first, allowing Fala to trot home from third base for the opening run of the game.
George Washington scored three runs in the fifth inning to invoke the run rule.
Gordon, Nelson and Aiden Hayes all recorded RBIs in the fifth inning, with Nelson earning the final RBI of the game, scoring Fala from third.
Fala went 3 for 3 at the plate, scoring four times, and was walked once.
Nelson, Smith and Anderson all totaled at least two RBIs. Nelson and Anderson each recorded two hits in the 10-run victory.
GW’s Ty Nettles earned the victory on the mound, pitching all five innings. He struck out seven batters, allowed four hits and gave up one earned run.
Seth Menarchek started on the mound for Parkersburg South, going 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and striking out two batters.
