WEST UNION — Tristan Swiger struck out 10 batters in a complete-game, one-run effort to help lift Doddridge County to a 12-1 win over Williamstown in the Little Kanawha Conference championship game Friday night.
Doddridge racked up 12 hits in the game and also took advantage of six Williamstown errors.
Swiger worked around eight hits and two walks to earn the pitching victory. He was also 2 for 4 at the plate. Dayne Murphy led DCHS with three hits in four at-bats. Murphy and Malachi Kelley drove in three runs apiece.
Murphy’s one-out single in the top of the first plated Swiger to get the scoring started. Later, with runners at second and third and two outs, Kelley’s base knock to left drove in a pair to make it 3-0.
The Bulldogs added on in the second. Maxwell Nicholson led off with a triple to left field before crossing the plate on Josh Dehaven’s groundout to second, making it 4-0.
In the third, Doddridge extended the lead to 5-0. Murphy and Luke Rokisky hit back-to-back one-out singles. Later, Murphy scored from third on a wild pitch.
Williamstown got a runner to third in the third. Jackson Fulton hit a two-out single and advanced two bases on an errant pickoff throw, but Swiger struck out the next batter to escape.
DCHS threatened again in the fourth when Swiger and Caleb Hall hit back-to-back two-out singles, but Jenner Burge induced an inning-ending infield popout.
The Yellowjackets got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Singles by Tyler Keiser and Dylan Pucella, plus a walk by Tyler Coleman, loaded the bases. Ben Raines’ infield single cut the deficit to 5-1, but Swiger sidestepped further damage with a strikeout.
Rokisky’s leadoff single in the fifth chased Burge from the mound. Malachi Kelley’s flyball to right off reliever Noah Powell was dropped, allowing Rokisky to score. Later, a single by Maxwell Nicholson brought in Evan Kelley to make it 7-1.
With the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, Malachi Kelley’s sac fly made it 8-1. Even Kelley’s infield popup should’ve ended the inning, but the ball was misplayed, allowing another run to cross to make it 9-1.
Swiger struck out the side in the sixth, and Murphy plated two more runs in the seventh to give the ‘Dogs an 11-run cushion.
Burge pitched four innings, striking out three and walking one in the loss. Noah Powell pitched three innings of relief, finishing with four free passes and two punchouts.
Keiser led the ‘Jackets with three hits in four ABs.
