Day 1 of state track meet in the books

CHARLESTON — Mother Nature was a factor all day here Friday at the state track and field meet contested inside the University of Charleston’s Laidley Field, but that didn’t stop a half dozen Mid-Ohio Valley athletes from claiming gold in their respective events.

The St. Marys girls, who are leading single-A with 35 points and are followed by Charleston Catholic (27), Ritchie County (23.5), Wheeling Central (14) and Wood County Christian (13.5) in the top five, watched Avry Bennett clear 10 feet to win the pole vault.

Ritchie County’s Natalie Henger held off Pocahontas County’s Alyson Taylor, 119-4 to 119-1, to win the discus.

In Class AA, the Williamstown girls got a winning discus heave of 123 feet, 6 inches from Reagan Corbett, who threw 37-3 to finish runner-up in the shot put ahead of Doddridge County’s Brooke Burnside (3rd, 33-5.5) and Tyler Consolidated’s Ayo Buerger (4th, 32-3).

Burnside placed third in the discus (112-1), teammate Jeonah Underwood was fifth (108-1) and Yellowjacket Jordyn Gains placed eighth (97-0).

The Yellowjacket girls, who got a state runner-up finish in the 3200 from Cassie Sites (11:44.85) with teammate Sylvia Harris placing fourth with a time of 12:37.78, led the team race with 42 points. Buffalo (24), Doddridge County (20), Frankfort (16) and Lincoln (15) followed.
