Area thinclads earn state meet bids
Area regional qualifiers have been determined for next week’s Ohio state track and field championships set for Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Saturday at Muskingum University in the Division III, Region 8 meet the Warren girls tied for 12th with 21 points.
Sydney Starcher was runner-up in the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 5 inches to finish an inch behind Batavia’s Lauren Cravens, who is also a senior.
“She was at the indoor state meet. Coming in they were both seeded at 5-5,” said WHS head coach Tony Zaleski of Starcher and Cravens facing off. “It got up to 5-6 and that girl hit her PR. Sydney is happy with it. She’s ready for next week.”
The Warriors were hoping Abby Whited (2nd, 300H, 45.36; 8th, 100H, 15.94) would advance in both hurdles events as athletes automatically qualify to state if they place in the top five individually or on a relay.
“Last week in the district finals Abby set the school record in both of those and just had a phenomenal day,” Zaleski said. “She was a little disappointed in her 100 hurdles today, but she ran a good race (300H).
“Abby came out, set herself up and she likes to make a move about 180 in and just kind of hold it and trust her endurance. She had a good race. She was happy with it.”
The WHS girls 4×2 team of Emma Parker, Raniah Singh, Whited and Julianna Huffman ran a 1:45.41 to place fifth and grab the last qualifying spot.
“They were seeded sixth and then they ran a PR and set the school record, and they were able to get in too, so we’re excited for that group as well,” added the coach.
Warren’s boys competed Friday at Troy High School in the Division II, Region 7 championship and placed 10th with 20 points. Marietta, which saw Ian Putnam advance to state in both the 1600 (3rd, 4:13.19) and 3200 (3rd, 9:10.24), finished in a tie for 17th with a dozen points.
Mason Werry, who the coach noted “set a PR the other day and they (all the state qualifiers) are all aiming for the podium,” picked up 10 points by winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 38.56. Teammate Clay Perry finished sixth after crossing in 39.89
“The 300s were actually kind of crazy,” admitted Zaleski. “It got down to the last hurdle and Clay was actually in first place and he clipped the last hurdle.
“As he clipped it, Mason passed him to win and then the next four guys passed Clay and then Clay fell to sixth. It was a tough watch. We were all heartbroken for him. It was hard.”
Kyle Anthony also made it to the final meet of the season by placing fourth in the 800 with a clocking of 1:56.62.
“Kyle ran like a really tactical race,” stressed Zaleski. “There was a kid (Jayden Beverly, runner-up) from Chillicothe that he knew, who was kind of like the lead time, and he ran with him at districts, so he had a good idea of where he needed to be based off of where Chillicothe was. He came out and he sat in a good spot to make a move.
“With about 150 meters left there was a whole lot of shuffling going around and there was some bumping, but when he got to the last stretch he kind of turned it on and was able to hold his spot. He ran a good race. It was a smart race. It wasn’t like a try to burn it out. It was like where is everybody going to be when we need to all kick and he ran it just how he needed to.”
In the Division V, Region 16 meet Saturday at Southeastern High School the Federal Hocking girls tied for third (36) and were followed by Shenandoah (T8th, 26) along with Caldwell and Eastern, which had 13 points apiece and tied for 22nd.
Lancer Annamarie Montle qualified in both hurdles events (1st, 100, 15.08; 3rd, 300, 47.45) and also won the pole vault after clearing 12 feet, 4 inches.
Caldwell’s Camy Crock qualified in both throwing events thanks to taking runner-up in the discus (125-1) and placing fourth in the shot put (35-7.25). Eastern’s Brooklyn Barkey continued her season after throwing 117 feet, 8 inches to place third in the discus.
Shenandoah’ Ida Estadt will compete at state in both the 1600 (4th, 5:10.81) and the 3200 (4th, 11:15.14), while Zep Alyssa Crum qualified by finishing third in the 800 with a time of 2:18.27.
The Zeps also advanced their 4×2 (5th Emily Moore, Emma Dailey, Crum, Breanna Leach: 1:47.96) and Eastern qualified its 4×4 (5th Andy Atha, Lily Simpson, Kinslie Well, Sadi Haught: 4:15.31).
On the boys’ side, Federal Hocking had 16 points and tied for 14th, while Caldwell was 30th with five points and Waterford tied for 31st with four points.
Federal Hocking’s Gabe Bray finished runner-up in the long jump (20-6.25) and had a third-place effort in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 1 inch.
The only other area qualifier was the Caldwell 4×2 team of Talon Bettinger, Garnar Gaydos, Aiden Danford and Alex Sheanshang, who took fourth after crossing in 1:33.57.
Earlier in the week at the Division IV, Region 12 meet at Austintown Fitch High School, Fort Frye’s Reiley Miller qualified in the shot put after placing fourth with a heave of 36 feet, 8 inches.
Shenandoah, which received a third-place time of 49.75 in the 400 by Logan Gabel, watched as Braxton Barnett won all four of his events. The Zep swept the hurdles (110H, 14.36; 300H, 36.98), cleared 6-4 in the high jump and went 21-6.5 in the long jump.
The only other qualifier was Morgan sprinter Braylon Miller, who won the 400 with a time of 48.68.
