PARKERSBURG — Warren’s Abby Whited (32.5) and Mason Werry (28.5) earned high-point honors here Thursday at the Parkersburg South Invitational inside the Erickson All-Sports Facility as the host Warriors left town with both team titles.

Head coach Tony Zaleski watched the Warrior boys secure the crown with 242 points as the host Patriots (135) and Wirt County (84) followed. The WHS girls amassed 229 points to top Parkersburg South’s 159 and third-place Parkersburg’s 82.

Whited took first in the 400 ahead of teammate Ava Lemasters (1:07.17-1:09.35) and also won both hurdles events. In the 100, Whited’s 16.95 topped Patriot Jaclynne Welch’s 17.68, while the Warrior clocked in at 51.08 in the 300 hurdles as South’s Shelby Battin (57.44) was runner-up.

“Abby had a good night,” admitted coach Zaleski, who watched Whited anchor the victorious 4×4 (4:35.05) to close the meet with teammate Camryn Edgell, Ashlee Pate and Raniah Singh.

“She’s actually been really sick for the past week. We weren’t even sure if she was going to run today.”

Werry edged South’s Jordan Foster 15.67 to 15.83 to win the 110 high hurdles, but had to settle for a second-place showing in the 300 hurdles behind fellow Warrior Clay Perry (41.14-41.56).

In the long jump, Werry was runner-up to South’s Wyatt Bartley, who beat him by three inches after going 18-10. Werry also picked up 2.5 points by being on the winning 4×4 (3:31.94) with Kyle Anthony, Emrick Lizon and the anchor Perry.

“Mason had a good night,” added coach Zaleski. “He’s got a lot stronger this offseason so he’s been pushing a lot and working on the hurdles. He’s pretty strong.”

Parkersburg South, which honored its senior class during the break for head coach Megan Jones, had a double-winner thanks to Alyssa McCrady, who won the 800 over Pate (2:32.68-2:33.78) and went 5:37.91 in the 1600 as teammate Lexi McKinney followed (5:59.56).

Patriot Kymani Prince’s effort of 15 feet, 11 inches was good enough to top Warren’s Sydney Starcher runner-up effort of 15-8.75.

Starcher, who finished runner-up at the Adidas indoor nationals in the high jump late last month, cleared 5-4, but Parkersburg’s Mya Baruwa set a PR and won the event after clearing 5 feet, 6 inches.

Parkersburg’s girls also got a win in the shot put thanks to Karma Hedges (31-3.5) as Warren’s Josi Waterman finished second with a throw of 30 feet, 8 inches.

Warren, which received a pair of golds from Emma Parker in the 100 (13.28 to Baruwa’s 13.38) and the 200 (28.08 to Singh’s 28.49), also was aided to victory by getting a 1-2 finish in the pole vault from Alexia Wigal (8-6) and Kenzie Thompson (7-0).

The Warrior boys had wins in the 100 and the 200 from Deacon Lambert, who went 23.25 to best South’s Miguel Amezquita’s 24.18 in the 200 while his 11.46 nipped Patriot Cayson Posey’s 11.77 in the 100.

Perry picked up 10 points for WHS thanks to his win in the 400 where he went 50.05 with Wirt County’s Tyler Smith (51.78) finishing second.

While Alex Bishop’s 2:10.77 and Noah Boykin’s 2:15.31 in the 800 resulted in another 1-2 finish, Luke Rettenberger left the EASF with a pair of golds. In the 1600, the Warrior beat Wirt County’s Matt Balis (4:47.86-5:00.13) and in the 3200 he clocked in at 9:58.09 as South’s Gatlin McLain (10:11.41) took runner-up.

Wirt County had a 1-2 finish for head man Nathan Edwards in the high jump thanks to Braxton Dennis (5-8) and Kaedon Sees (5-6).

Parkersburg’s boys had a pair of 10-point efforts thanks to Alex Greer clearing 13 feet in the pole vault and Drey Grinter throwing 45 feet, 7 inches to claim the shot put title. Warren’s Jaxon Venham (11-6) and Craig Bennett (43-0) were the runners-up, respectively.

Lambert, Lizon, Landyn Barton and Davin Dickel ran a 45.54 to give Warren the win in the 4×1. Dickel, Nate Hall, Conner Curtis and Lizon posted a 1:35.77 to win the 4×2. In the 4×8, Rettenberger, Perry, Kyle Anthony and Bishop clocked in with a winning time of 9:02.63.

Parkersburg South won the shuttles for both the boys and the girls. Bartley, Drake Laughery, Trenton Foster and anchor Jordan Foster finished in 1:04.70. For the girls, Welch, Tae Richards, Sophia Shamblin and the anchor Prince had a victorious effort of 1:11.27.

Warren’s girls also won the other three relay events – 4×1 (Ava Lemasters, Singh, Keaghan Pittman, Adelynn Russell: 56.12), 4×2 (Wigal, Russell, Lemasters, Emma Parker: 1:55.52) and the 4×8 (Pate, Holly Reed, Edgell, Adilynn Greenup: 10:37.48).

“First time to this one. We haven’t been over here to South in a little while,” admitted Zaleksi, who watched Reed run a 13:00.94 to top South’s Jayln Eddy (13:14.55) in the 3200. “We had some PRs. Normally our meets throughout the week it’s two or three entries and we had five tonight so we could get a lot more kids in.

“We’re missing a few because it’s our spring break. Most of the kids ran in the relays and our distance kids got loaded up and got a good workout in. We ran pretty well. It’s still early so we’re going to tweak some stuff a little bit, but as we get moving we’ll get our more concrete varsity group and kind of figure out what to do.”
