PARKERSBURG — Volleyball fans from the Mid-Ohio Valley and beyond will have a unique opportunity come 6:30 p.m. Friday inside Parkersburg South’s Rod Oldham Athletic Center.
West Virginia University head coach Jen Greeny’s Mountaineers are set to square off against the Bobcats from Ohio University in a spring match, but there’s also a youth clinic set beforehand.
“The NCAA allows us to play some spring matches so we’re bringing some high-level volleyball down to Parkersburg,” said coach Greeny. “We’re going to play the match at 6:30 p.m. with free admission.
“There’s going to be a youth clinic that we’re going to do from 5 to 6 and that’s also free, but it has to be sixth grade or below.”
Prior to the match, youth volleyball players will be able to learn skills and have some fun with the Mountaineers.
“All of our players will be there,” admitted Greeny. “They’ll get a chance to work with current West Virginia players and learn from them and meet them. There will be autographs and all that good stuff.”
The Mountaineers, who finished 15-15 last season, had their first spring match on Sunday, March 29, which resulted in a 3-0 setback at Pitt.
“Spring can be a little more informal, but I think we’re going to try and play kind of a normal match,” Greeny said. “Some other colleges are really trying to do this too. You know, build the game and get more fans.
“We think growing volleyball in the state of West Virginia is really important and we want to get our team out in front of as many people as we can.”
Anyone interested in participating in the youth clinic, which is presented by Blue and Gold Enterprises and sponsored by Par Mar and Jay W. Gerber, Jr. are asked to register at the following link: https://forms.gle/oQzvTBv9USpgpkGi7
“We actually went to Ohio last year and played them on their campus,” added the coach. “It was kind of their turn to come back to us and we thought we’d do something different and bring it to a high school, a town and just get ourselves out there a little bit more.”
