BUFFALO — Gilmer County’s Kenley Hartshorn upped her mound mark to 14-0 here Friday night after the Titans registered a 15-2 five-inning mercy rule victory versus Wahama in the Little Kanawha Conference championship game.
Head coach Wendell Tomblin watched the sophomore Hartshorn surpass the 200 career strikeout mark as the 22-0 Titans won the second LKC crown in school history and the first since 2019.
“We played pretty well,” admitted coach Tomblin, who got an RBI from Hartshorn along with a complete game three-hitter that featured one earned run allowed, one base on balls and eight punchouts.
Paige Montgomery carried the biggest stick at the dish. She went 3-for-4 and knocked in five. Not to be outdone, Alexis Stoddard was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Erin Stoddard also had a three-hit game in as many at-bats and scored thrice.
Emeri Hickman chipped in two hits, a double and two runs-batted-in. Kaelyn Mullins crossed three times and knocked in a run as did Kaydee Martin.
Hayley Sprouse contributed two hits for the Titans, who also received a double and one RBI from Ari White.
“I thought we’d be good. I didn’t know if we would be this good or not,” said Tomblin, whose squad will try to continue their winning ways when St. Marys invades at 6 p.m. Monday. “It’s alright. They just go play. They don’t get excited about anything. They just go play.”
Gracie Banks (2.2 IP, 0 BB, 2 SO) suffered the mound setback for the 13-9 White Falcons, who got an RBI double from Fiona VanMatre.
Wahama, which entertains Southern at 6 p.m. Monday, also had Audrey Reynolds score twice and join teammate Marlee Carr with a single.
