WILLIAMSTOWN – Depth in an array of events on both the boys and girls side enabled the Doddridge County track program to make it a clean sweep of the team titles during Tuesday’s Fenton Relays at Williamstown High School.
“I found out that the girls can really work hard when they have to and when they really want to,” said DCHS’ Faith Ball, who is in her first year as girls head coach after serving as an assistant in previous years.
On the girls side, the Bulldogs only won two of a possible seven relay events on the track, but peppered high placings in the field events. Kali Cooper won the high jump (4-8), while Payton Trent followed suit in the long jump (15-9). In the throws, DCHS duplicated a second, fifth and sixth place showing in both the shot and discus.
DCHS finished with 92 points, compared to 68 for runner-up Williamstown. Parkersburg South was a close third at 67 points, while Wahama took fifth at 42 points. Behind a school record height for freshman Addison Reutzel in the pole vault and another school record by the distance medley relay, Wood County Christian finished with 26 points.
“We are right where we need to be — we are pretty much on track for where we need to be in May,” Ball continued. “The girls are excited about this season — they know what the goal is and they have personal goals as well as team goals.”

On the boys side, Williamstown’s distance runners set a school record right off the bat after winning in a time of 19:58.59. The same foursome of Chase Pickering, Jimmy Erlandson, Gavin Wilburn and Vincent Zegres competing in the 4×800 accounted for the Yellowjackets’ only other win on the track.
That opened the door for DCHS, which won three relays on the track in addition to individual victories for Nathanael Lloyd in the high jump (5-10) and Trey McDonough in the pole vault (13-6). Another seven Bulldogs placed in the top three in their respective field events.
In the team standings, DCHS scored 104 points, while runner-up Williamstown finished with 75 points. Marietta and Wahama tied for third at 62 points, and Parkersburg South slipped into the No. 5 slot with 59 points. One school record was established by the WCCS boys (23 points).
“This is a really fun meet — people may be in some different events they are used to competing in,” DCHS boys coach Bobby Burnside said. “This is the last of our midseason meets and now we are into the stretch run where we have to dial in and figure our final lineups in the next few weeks.
“We are starting to get healthy and that’s good. It’s shaping up to be a real monumental battle at the state track meet. Right now I’m looking at four teams — Doddridge, Williamstown, Frankfort and Independence. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.”

Parkersburg South walked off with a total of five wins on the track, including four from the girls team. Kymani Prince, Sophia Shamblin and Jaclynee Welch competed on the winning shuttle hurdles and 4×100 relays.
“We had really good handoffs in most of our races — we were really working on that (Monday),” South coach Megan Jones said. “Today, the kids ran well. Today revealed a lot for us, actually, even though it was a fun meet.
“We have been moving people around on relays to see what’s going to work, what’s going to fit. We will be switching some things up, changing some stuff.”
Other individual winners from the field events included two members from the Williamstown girls track program. Grace Boone cleared 9 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault while teammate Reagan Corbett swept the throws — going 127-7 in the discus and 35-9 in the discus.
Corbett’s winning margin in the discus was 21-plus feet.

“My disc wasn’t anywhere close to a personal best, but I was definitely consistent today on the field,” Corbett said. “My shots weren’t where I want them to be. I started off the beginning of the season really strong. I’m just trying to work through some things. I’ll get there.”
Like their female counterparts, the WCCS boys also set a school record in the distance medley relay.
“For our distance runners, it was a very successful night,” WCCS coach Emily Sams said. “But a lot of our sprinters are new this year. We’re kind of starting from the beginning with those kids
“As for the team, none of our kids have peaked yet. We are having PRs at pretty much every meet, but not every kid is peaking at every meet, which is the way I’m intending it to go. So we are making small victories along the way.
“Hopefully, we are setting them up to peak right around regionals and state.”

Marietta’s lone outright victory occurred with the 4×1600 foursome of Kelly Nicholas, Aubrey Christensen, Jordan Haessly and Teagan Brown) winning in a time of 26:39.86.
