PHS boys win Kim Nutter Invitational

PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg boys defended their home track while the PHS girls placed runner-up to Huntington in Friday’s Kim Nutter Invitational at Stadium Field.

The Big Reds outscored the Highlanders 150-138.33 on the boys side while HHS out-pointed the PHS girls 154.8-144.

AJ Payne set a new meet record in the 400 with a time of 50.23 seconds, besting teammate Landen Deuley’s mark of 50.36 from last year. As it happens, Deuley was this year’s runner-up in the event at 50.87. Payne, Deuley, Gavin Bowman and Anthony Herrera teamed up to win the 4×400 (3:39).

Carter Thorpe captured the 3200 title with a time of 9:55. In the field events, Javel Chandler (high jump; 6-0) and Alex Greer (pole vault; 12-6) both came away victorious.

“We had some people out,” said PHS boys coach Rod O’Donnell. “Our depth showed tonight and so people stepped up and took those places. We had some different teams there we hadn’t seen last week and Huntington has a very good team, but we rose to the occasion. We moved people around and did what we had to do. Javel had another good meet. There’s no question. Everybody’s times were affected (by the cold weather), but we still had some meet records. I was pleased.”

Tyler Consolidated, which placed sixth in the boys standings, claimed wins in two events. Amos Kimble won the 1600 at 4:30 and also helped Travis Moore, Kayden Utt and Brody Nice win the 4×800 at 8:35.

Point Pleasant’s Caden Hill swept the throwing events, including setting a new meet record in the discus (173-4).

Huntington’s Mason Little ran the 110 hurdles 14.61 seconds, the fastest time in meet history.

On the girls side, the lone meet record to fall came in the 3200 by Hurricane’s Francey Tidd. She ran the race in 10:53 to best the previous mark of 11:08 set by Parkersburg’s Madison Trippett in 2018.

For the Big Reds, Morgan Metz placed runner-up to Tidd in the 3200 and the mile.

“Part of the team will be at South on Thursday and then we’re going to the Rocky Brands on Saturday at Nelsonville, and there will be some good teams there,” O’Donnell said. “Lancaster will be there and they are super. Logan, it’s the usual teams that are there.”

The PHS girls are heading to Myrtle Beach next week to compete.

Starting at $2.99/week.
