Hoops roundup: South holds on to beat Wheeling Park in regular-season finale

St. Marys, Wood County Christian claim tournament wins

WHEELING — JD Williams’ 3-pointer attempt rimmed out at the buzzer, giving Parkersburg South a 64-62 win over Wheeling Park Tuesday in a regular-season finale.

PSHS, which improved to 17-5, jumped out to an early 18-2 lead but watched WPHS cut it to 20-17 by the end of the first. South led 31-28 at halftime and 50-49 after three.

Williams led all scorers with 22 points while teammate Jordan Beck-James chipped in 21. Josh Huffman added nine for Park.

Cam Fallon led the visiting Patriots with 12 points on four 3-pointers. Harry Silvis finished with 11 points and two assists for South, which will play the Oak Hill-Woodrow Wilson winner in a regional co-final at 7 p.m. next Wednesday at Rod Oldham Athletic Center. Taj Joyce added 10 points, eight rebounds, two dimes and two steals while Matthew Mullen and Logan Graham netted eight points apiece. Mullen also grabbed 10 boards and blocked four shots.

St. Marys 51, Cameron 48

CAMERON — No matter how the regular season goes, the postseason is a fresh start.

St. Marys’ only regular-season win came on Dec. 29, but the Blue Devils opened tournament play Tuesday with a 51-48 victory over Cameron in the Class A, Region I quarterfinals.

Andre Anderson led SMHS (2-21) with 16 points. Roe Maston added 12 points and six assists, Trevor Maley netted 10 points, Greg Jemison grabbed seven rebounds and Jude Bills chipped in six points.

Cameron (4-18) led 14-9 after one and 26-22 at halftime, but St. Marys, which visits Clay-Battelle Thursday in the regional semis, rallied for a 36-34 advantage going into the fourth.

The Dragons received a game-high 17 points from Collin Magers plus nine and eight from Hunter Dobbs and Carter Paczenski, respectively.

Wood County Christian 77, Valley 51

WILLIAMSTOWN — Daniel Cunningham poured in a game-high 35 points to help lead Wood County Christian past Valley 77-51 in a Class A, Region I quarterfinal matchup Tuesday.

The Wildcats will travel to Ritchie County for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday in the regional semis.

Peyton Russell added 15 points for Wood County Christian, which led 15-10 after one, 41-20 at halftime and 62-36 entering the fourth. Asher Fenton, Angelus Palaya and Cameron Coppernoll netted nine points each for the Wildcats.

Wyatt Rogers paced the Lumberjacks with 14 points. Koleton Kinkade added 12 while Zane Fluharty, Gaige Wichterman and Cayden Stackpole each chipped in six.
