Hoops roundup: South girls survive in OT

INSTITUTE — Lindsey Logston’s game-high 33 points helped power Parkersburg South past Huntington 61-56 in overtime Thursday in the Country Roads Shootout.

South (13-3) led 15-13 after one and 31-21 at halftime, but the Highlanders (10-8) made a run in the third and took a 39-38 advantage into the fourth. South outscored HHS 10-9 in the final period to force OT, which the Patriots won 13-8 to claim the victory.

Quinn Bolyard’s 14 points and seven rebounds complemented Logston, who grabbed eight boards herself. Emilee Owens chipped in eight points and six rebounds while Grace Dotson pulled down a team-best nine boards.

South, which plays host to Warren at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, shot 32.2% (19 for 59) from the floor and was 18 for 25 from the free-throw line.

Huntington was 39.3% (22 for 56) from the field and 8 for 17 at the charity stripe. Lala Sloan paced the Highlanders with 29 points. Ava Gallion scored 10 points and led Huntington with 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Liz Bohren chipped in eight points and 10 boards.

St. Marys 70, Sherman 34

INSTITUTE – Brynnley Bulluck led the way with a game-high 27 points here Thursday for St. Marys during the Country Roads Shootout as the Blue Devils extended their winning streak to five following a 70-34 victory against Sherman.

The 6-7 Tide, who trailed 25-7 after one and 50-18 at intermission, were led by Audrina Smith’s dozen counters.

SMHS, now 13-4 with a home game tonight versus Ritchie County, also got a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds from Laney Watkins.

Bulluck added a game-high five assists while teammate Landrey Riggs chipped in eight points and registered a game-high four steals.

Ritchie County 49, Cameron 28

CAMERON — Ritchie County bounced back from a double-overtime loss to Frontier on Wednesday by beating Cameron 49-28 Thursday.

The Rebels (13-5) got another triple-double from Elsa Law, who finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds, 10 steals and seven assists. Chelsie Jeffrey added eight points while Emily Bush, Abbigayl Cox and Callie Smith tallied six apiece. Cox and Bush grabbed six boards each while registering four and five steals, respectively. Bush blocked two shots and Smith notched three dimes.

The Dragons (8-7) were paced by Macy Bertram’s six points.

Ritchie led 12-7 after one, 25-12 at halftime and 43-17 going into the fourth.

BOYS

Martinsburg 77, Parkersburg South 71

INSTITUTE — Martinsburg jumped out to a 23-11 lead after one and made that early cushion stand up in a 77-71 win over Parkersburg South Thursday at the Country Roads Shootout.

South (14-4) cut it to 37-29 by halftime and trailed 52-44 entering the fourth but couldn’t completely close the gap.

Cody Shallis led Martinsburg with 22 points. Mikey Green added a 13-point, 11-rebounds double-double while Brayden Ansler and Kevin Myers scored 10 points apiece. Boston Todd chipped in eight points while Nykeem Thompson and Zion Stanley netted seven apiece.

Harry Silvis led all scorers with 23 points for South, which shot 37.9% (22 for 58) from the floor. Matthew Mullen added 12 points and seven boards. Logan Graham also scored 12 points while Cam Fallon tallied 11. Taj Joyce pitched in six points for the Patriots, who travel to South Charleston on Tuesday.

Silvis, who became the program’s all-time leading scorer last week, broke the school record for 3-pointers made in a career Thursday. The mark was previously held by 2000 graduate Ryan Hopkins, who made 217 triples during his time in high school.

Wirt County 78, St. Marys 42

ELIZABETH — Wirt County shot a scorching 63.3% and rolled to a 78-42 victory over St. Marys Thursday at The Den.

The Tigers (13-4) made 31 shots on 49 attempts. They were led by Braylan Dawson’s 30 points. Dawson was a perfect 6 for 6 from beyond the arc while Alex Bevel, who added 16 points, nine assists and four steals, was 4 for 6 from 3. Tyler Smith finished with 10 points, four dimes and three steals, Easton Wyer tallied eight points and seven rebounds while Jake Moore also grabbed seven boards.

The result was never in doubt as WCHS led 28-9 after one, 49-21 at halftime and 65-32 going into the fourth.

St. Marys (1-15) got 11 points from Jude Bills, 10 from Roe Maston, nine from Trevor Maley and eight from Chan Wilkinson.

Tug Valley 91, Magnolia 43

INSTITUTE — Magnolia’s Kingston Christen scored a game-high 16 points here Thursday in the Country Roads Shootout, but defending Class A state champion Tug Valley started strong and never let up during a 91-43 victory.

The 7-10 Blue Eagles, who also got 13 points and seven rebounds from Noah Hood, are back in action tonight at Steubenville Central.

Tug Valley, which improved to 11-4, received double figure scoring efforts from Preston May (13), Carson Newsome (12), Bryson Elia (11) and Aiden Copeland (11).
