Hoops roundup: Ritchie girls down Roane
SPENCER — In a Little Kanawha Conference tournament game Tuesday, Ritchie County prevailed over Roane County by a score of 57-41.
Chelsie Jeffrey scored a game-high 19 points for the Rebels, who improved to 12-4. Jeffrey also tallied seven rebounds.
Elsa Law finished with 14 points, seven assists, six steals, six boards and four blocks for RCHS, which led 18-16 after one, 30-24 at halftime and 45-33 after three. Emily Bush contributed nine points and five boards while Jordin Bailey chipped in eight points. Abbigayl Cox led the team with nine rebounds.
Roane (7-6) got 14 points from Anna Tolley, eight from Josie Cox and seven from Ella Keen.
St. Marys 64, Wirt County 39
St. MARYS — Anna Bennett and Brynnley Bulluck had double-doubles to help lift St. Marys past Wirt County 64-39 Tuesday.
Bulluck, fresh off scoring her 1,000th career point in Saturday’s win against Belpre in the St. Marys Invitational championship game, posted game-highs of 26 points and 10 assists to go along with eight rebounds. Bennett added 20 points, a game-high 14 boards and six steals.
The score was tied at 11-all after one before the Blue Devils (12-4) used a 20-7 second-quarter run to take control going into halftime.
Laney Watkins chipped in seven points, seven rebounds, four dimes and three steals for SMHS, which takes on Sherman at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at West Virginia State.
Wirt (9-9) got 11 points from Lia Casenelli, eight from Mya Hatcher and six apiece from Breigyn Dawson and Kinsley Nicholais.
Doddridge County 57, Ravenswood 36
WEST UNION — Doddridge County’s second-quarter dominance lifted the Bulldogs to a 57-36 win over Ravenswood Tuesday in the Little Kanawha Conference tournament.
Down 10-9 after one, DCHS outscored the Red Devils 22-4 in the second to take a 31-14 halftime lead and never looked back.
Payton Trent led the Bulldogs with 15 points, followed by Aleigh Cheeseman with 14, Jaycee Lipscomb with 11 and Isabella Holtz and Brooke Dehaven with six each.
Ravenswood was led by Jayme Salser, who finished with 12 points, six steals and four assists. Rachel Lambert added 11 points and eight rebounds. Zemory Wise grabbed a team-high 10 boards.
Caldwell 49, Warren 35
CALDWELL — Mea Hendershot led all scorers with 14 points to help propel Caldwell past Warren 49-35 Monday.
Hendershot also tallied six steals for the Redskins, who improved to 16-5 on the year. Caldwell led 12-5 after one, 26-18 at halftime and 42-22 going into the fourth.
Lexi Franklin added 11 points for CHS, Breighlee Moracco netted nine points, seven steals and three assists while Lyla Lowe finished with six boards.
Warren (10-10) was led by Danica Gates’ 11 points. Jaelynn Nichols added nine points on three made 3-pointers and Juliana Huffman chipped in eight points.
BOYS
Frontier 56, Trinity Christian 44
MORGANTOWN — Frontier clinched a spot in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference 1A final with a 56-44 victory over Trinity Christian Tuesday.
The No. 3 Cougars (12-5) will take on top-seeded Heartland Christian at noon on Saturday at the ECO Center.
Jacob Bowersock double-doubled for Frontier, finishing with a game-high 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Avery Powell added 16 points and five dimes, Kason Hoff tallied nine points while Hunter Taylor chipped in eight points and 11 boards.
The game was tied at 11-all after one. Frontier led 27-25 at halftime and 40-36 after three before using a 16-8 run in the final minutes to secure the victory.
No. 2 Trinity (13-4) got 19 points from Maddox Mousadis, 13 from Austin Porta and nine from Collin Lemley.
Union 76, Calhoun County 36
INSTITUTE — Calhoun County only trailed 20-13 after the first quarter but got outscored 29-7 in the second as Union rolled to a 76-36 Country Roads Shootout victory here Tuesday.
Braylon Ward led the way for the victors with 24 points and a game-high four steals while teammates Corbin Streets and Eric Linkswiler, who had a game-high 12 rebounds, had 16 counters each.
Calhoun County, which dropped to 2-16 and plays host on Thursday to Richwood, was led in scoring by Chase Schoolcraft with 17 and Cooper Morris with a dozen. Micah Allen had five points and a team-high five boards in the setback.
Union, which improved to 7-9 and heads Saturday to Tygarts Valley, shot nearly 56% (34 of 61) from the field.
Poca 65, Tyler 52
INSTITUTE — Poca’s Dylan Eisel drained seven triples and registered a game-high 23 points here Tuesday at the Country Road Shootout to lead the Dots to a 65-52 Little Kanawha Conference victory versus Tyler Consolidated.
The 4-12 Silver Knights, who only trailed 10-9 after one but fell behind 27-20 at halftime and 46-33 entering the fourth, were led by Cam Strode’s 19 points and game-high four steals.
TCHS, which welcomes in Ritchie County on Friday, also got 10 points from Austin Peck along with seven points and a game-high seven rebounds from Ashton Morris.
Poca, now 4-11 with a game tonight at Braxton County, also had double figure scoring efforts from Austin Gillig (17) and Rylan Lett (10). Michael Overbaugh added nine markers and a game-high seven assists for the Dots.
Fort Frye 44, Magnolia 42
NEW MARTINSVILLE — Fort Frye erased a 14-7 first-quarter deficit and rallied for a 44-42 victory over Magnolia Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference consolation matchup.
Nate Adams paced the Cadets (10-9) with 16 points. Kainan Bradford added 10 points while Grady Hesson chipped in nine for FFHS, which plays host to Wood County Christian on Friday.
The Cadets cut the deficit to 23-21 by halftime and took a 36-32 advantage by the end of the third.
Magnolia (7-9) got a game-high 26 points from Kingston Christen while Noah Hood made four 3-pointers to add 12 points. The Blue Eagles play Tug Valley at noon Thursday at West Virginia State.
Waterford 73, Nelsonville-York 69
NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Reese Lang led four Waterford Wildcats in double figures in Tuesday’s 73-69 win over Nelsonville-York.
Lang scored a team-high 21 points after hitting four 3-pointers and going 5 for 5 at the free-throw line. Gavin Hiener added 19 points and six rebounds, Finn Pennock tallied 15 points, six boards and six assists and Weston Fairchild chipped in 14 points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Wildcats, who are now 11-9 and visit Belpre on Friday, led 21-17 after one, 37-31 at halftime and 53-42 going into the fourth.
The Buckeyes (11-9) received a game-high 26 points from Cameron Sullivan. Champ Schultz pitched in 16 points while Grant Elliott contributed 14.
Ravenswood 48, Clay County 40
INSTITUTE — Gonzo Garcia scored a game-high 21 points as Ravenswood defeated Clay County 48-40 Tuesday at West Virginia State
Carson Varney added 15 points, six rebounds and five steals for the Red Devils, who improved to 5-9 and will visit Braxton County on Friday.
RHS trailed 16-14 after one, cut it to 25-24 by halftime and led 34-32 by the end of the third. Kaden Walters chipped in six points while Garcia tallied five boards.
Clay County (8-6) was led by Joel Elliott’s 15 points. Spencer Faulker added eight while Talon Brown and Michael Foster netted six apiece.
