Hoops roundup: Ripley boys upend Shady Spring

INSTITUTE — In a showdown of ranked Class AAA programs here Wednesday at the Country Roads Shootout, No. 9 Ripley used a 28-14 edge on points off turnovers en route to a 45-33 upset of No. 6 Shady Spring.

The 9-4 Tigers, who got a game-high 14 points from Gabe Short and shot just 31% (11 of 35), trailed 15-8 after one and cut it to 22-20 at the half only to fall behind 34-24 entering the fourth.

Ripley, now 12-4 with a home game Friday versus Nicholas County, received double figure scoring efforts from Matthew Stellato (13), Brady McVay (12) and Kyler Doss (10).

Jace Lilly chipped in six points and a game-high seven rebounds for Shady Spring, which also got nine markers from Cutter Boggs.

Parker Smith had a game-high five assists for the Vikings, who got six caroms and a trio of steals from McVay.

Westside 50, Williamstown 40

INSTITUTE – Williamstown held a 28-19 halftime advantage here Wednesday against Westside in the Country Roads Shootout, but the Yellowjackets shot less than 24% in the second half, including missing 10 of 11 from beyond the arc, and suffered a 50-40 setback.

The 9-5 Renegades, who are No. 10 in Class AA, used a 21-7 effort in the third quarter to turn the tide.

Bradyn Waldron (16), Hendrix Cook (12) and Braxton Waldron (10) led the victors in scoring.

Williamstown, which dropped to 9-8 with a game Saturday at Logan, received 13 points from Caleb Atkinson, a dozen on four 3s by Dom Strcula as well as 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds from Tyler Keiser.

Huntington St. Joe 74, Parkersburg Catholic 45

INSTITUTE — Grady Paynter went off for game-highs of 29 points and 12 rebounds here Wednesday at the Country Roads Shootout as No. 9 Huntington St. Joe raced past No. 2 Parkersburg Catholic, 74-48, in a Class A upset.

The 14-2 Crusaders, who had their nine-game winning streak snapped and return to action on Monday when Wood County Christian invades, were led in scoring by Carter Nelson with 12, Preston Randolph with 10 and Zane Kirk with nine.

The Irish, who improved to 9-5 and never looked back after jumping out to a 25-5 lead following the first quarter, also got 15 points from Micaiah Ehirm and 10 by Isaiah Sanders, who had game-highs of eight assists and three steals.

Logan 65, Doddridge County 57

INSTITUTE – No. 3 Class AA Doddridge County had its eight-game winning streak snapped here Wednesday night at the Country Roads Shootout after suffering a 65-57 setback to Logan.

The Bulldogs, now 14-2 with a game Saturday at Petersburg, had no answer for Lucas Lambert, who finished with game-highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Ivan Miller also double-doubled with 12 points and 11 boards.

Doddridge County, which was paced by Jerod Trent’s 18 points, led 16-11 after one and 31-26 at halftime, but trailed 43-41 entering the final eight minutes.

Logan, which missed all 13 of its attempts from downtown, owned a commanding 48-26 edge on points in the paint.

In the setback, Landon Thomas contributed eight points, 10 caroms and a game-high three steals while Heston Hayes had seven markers and a trio of assists.

GIRLS

Gilmer County 69, Tolsia 25

INSTITUTE — Defending Class A state champion Gilmer County jumped out to a 22-5 lead after the opening quarter here Wednesday at the Country Roads Shootout and rolled to a 69-25 victory versus Tolsia.

The Titans, who will carry a 15-1 mark into Saturday night’s Little Kanawha Conference championship game versus Williamstown inside Glenville State University’s Waco Center, got a game-high 18 points, including four treys, from Lena Frymier while Ava Dobbins double-doubled with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Twin sister Blair Dobbins registered 11 points and Laura Brannon chipped in seven markers.

Tolsia, which slipped to 10-9, was paced by Jacey Crum’s six points and Kalynn Salmons’ five assists.

Gilmer County’s Paige Sterns contributed four points, seven caroms and a game-high six dimes.

Doddridge 60, Roane 35

INSTITUTE — Roane County’s upset bid of No. 10 Class AA Doddridge County was a theme for the first quarter here Wednesday at the Country Roads Shootout, but the Bulldogs used a 32-6 points in the paint advantage to turn back the Raiders, 60-35.

Aleigh Cheeseman led the victors with a game-high 20 points. Payton Trent and Kamryn Satterfield had 11 points apiece while Brooke DeHaven had five markers and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Roane County, now 7-7 with a four-game losing streak, received 12 counters each from Amelia Pope and Anna Tolley, who had seven boards and joined Trent with a trio of assists.

The Raiders, who play tonight at Buffalo, got outscored 36-14 in the middle two quarters.

DCHS, which improved to 11-6, will try to extend its winning streak to five on Friday when Braxton County rolls into West Union.

Warren 48, Morgan 39

VINCENT — Warren scored 12 points apiece in each quarter and came away with a 48-39 victory over Morgan Wednesday.

The Warriors (11-10), who led 12-8 after one, 24-23 at halftime and 36-29 entering the fourth, have one regular season game remaining on Saturday at Parkersburg South.

After that, Warren will turn its attention to the tournament on Feb. 19, when it visits Hillsboro.

Against the Raiders, Jaelynn Nichols and Josie Venham scored nine points apiece to lead the way. Venham scored all nine of her points at the free-throw line, where she was 9 for 12. DeLanet Gates, Jayda Murray and Juliana Huffman added eight points each while Danica Gates chipped in six.

Morgan finished the regular season 11-11 and will play host to St. Clairsville on Feb. 19. Gianna Myers led all scorers with 19 points. Myleigh Williams tallied 10 and Jade Rose netted six.
