Hoops roundup: Local girls teams begin tourney trail
ELLENBORO — Elsa Law finished with a quadruple-double in Ritchie County’s 68-33 regional tournament win over Clay-Battelle Thursday, and she didn’t even play the final five minutes of the game.
The Rebels, who improved to 16-6, got game-highs of 31 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals from Law.
Callie Smith added 14 points while Chelsie Jeffrey chipped in six.
RCHS led 20-4 after one, 40-8 at halftime and 61-20 entering the fourth.
Ali Hellyer scored 11 points and was Clay-Battelle’s only double-digit scorer. Lily Owens added seven.
Ritchie will visit Parkersburg Catholic Wednesday in the Class A, Region I co-final, with the winner advancing to state. The two teams previously met in the regular season on Dec. 30 in Ellenboro, with the Crusaderettes claiming a 69-61 win.
Gilmer County 73, Hannan 26
GLENVILLE — Gilmer County began tournament play in dominating fashion, routing Hannan 74-26 Thursday night in the Class A, Region IV quarterfinals.
The Titans (21-2) will play host to Tolsia on Wednesday in the semis.
Gilmer led Hannan 24-14 after one, 42-18 at halftime and 57-23 going into the fourth.
Ava Dobbins led GCHS with 18 points. Kenley Hartshorn added 14, Blair Dobbins netted 10 and Paige Sterns tallied seven. Lena Frymier and Emeri Hickman chipped in six apiece.
For Hannah, Emma Wilson knocked down six 3-pointers for a team-high 18 points.
Wirt County 51, Man 11
ELIZABETH — Wirt County jumped out to a 24-2 first-quarter lead and never looked back in a 51-11 win over Man in Thursday’s Class A, Region IV semifinals.
The Tigers, who will head to Tug Valley on Wednesday with a spot in the state tournament on the line, led 37-5 at halftime and 47-9 entering the fourth. Breigyn Dawson led all scorers with 13 points. Simone Hall added 10, Peyten McKown and Mya Hatcher chipped in seven apiece and Lia Casenelli netted six.
Brayley Thompson’s five points paced Man.
BOYS
Tyler Consolidated 75, St. Marys 52
KIDWELL — Garrett Bordenkircher led five players in double figures for Tyler Consolidated in Thursday’s 75-52 win over St. Marys.
Bordenkircher scored a team-high 15 points, followed by Brody Giovinazzo with 13, Cole Lemasters and Landon Boggs with 12 apiece and Ashton Morris with 11. Coley Bell chipped in eight points for the Silver Knights, who led 22-10 after one, 45-26 at halftime and 58-33 going into the fourth.
Roe Maston put up a game-high 17 points for the Blue Devils with Trevor Maley adding 10. Tripp Morrison and Cayden Barnard tallied eight apiece while Chan Wilkinson netted seven.
