Belpre, Waterford advance to district finals
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Gracie Bills had a night to remember in Belpre’s 38-32 win over Coal Grove in Tuesday’s district semifinals.
The junior put up a monster double-double of 20 points and 20 rebounds, eclipsing the 1,000-point mark in the process to send the Golden Eagles to Saturday’s district championship game.
Meeting Belpre there will be fellow TVC-Hocking foe Waterford, which cruised past Ripley 28-24 in the late game Tuesday. The Wildcats swept the regular-season series from the Golden Eagles. Saturday’s game at Southeastern is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. tip.
Bills scored six of the first eight points for Belpre as the game was tied at 8-all in the first. Rebecca Dome, who tied Jenna Anson for team-high honors with 11 points, put Coal Grove up 10-8 before a 3-pointer by Madi Lauer put BHS back in front. Another basket by Bills made it 13-10 after one.
Belpre led by as many as seven in the second, and it was 23-18 at halftime.
The Hornets, who finished the season 17-6, made an 11-3 run in the third to go up 29-28, but Bills’ bucket put the Golden Eagles (8-16) back on top going into the fourth.
Anson put Coal Grove in front one last time to start the fourth, but Bills’ drive to the basket not only gave Belpre the lead for good, but put her over 1,000 points in her career.
After Khloe Cooper’s basket put the Golden Eagles up three, Belpre fended off Coal Grove by hitting 4 of 8 from the free-throw line down the stretch. The Golden Eagles allowed just three points over the final eight minutes to secure the victory.
Cooper, Julia Way and Madi Lauer added four points apiece for Belpre.
The Wildcats (13-10) started slow, rallied for a big lead then clung for dear life to hold on for the victory.
Down 8-2 late in the first, Waterford used a 15-0 run to go up 17-8 at halftime. Up 22-13 going into the fourth, WHS watched as the Blue Jays used an 8-2 run to get within 24-21. It was 26-24 with 1:29 remaining, but Waterford did not allow a point the rest of the way to close it out.
