Parkersburg South girls claim Patriot Invitational title

PARKERSBURG – A pair of season best swims from junior Camryn Mclain paved the way to a team title for the Parkersburg South girls during Saturday’s Patriot Invitational at the Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg.

Mclain joined Parkersburg’s Delaney Snodgrass as two of three female swimmers to tie for first at 40 points in the individual standings on the strength of a gold-medal performances in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Teammates Paige Johnson and Vivian Grimm both captured one gold and one silver in their individual events and tied for fourth place at 37 points.

South finished with 555 points, while runner-up PHS scored 391.5 points.

“We had a slow start to the season, but we swam really well today,” South coach Ryan Radcliff said. “We knew we would be in for a slow start for multiple reasons – we had newer and younger girls. For girls like Cam, the meet was like a turning point. She had an injury from soccer season and coming off a tough couple weeks of training. I don’t know what it was, but everything started clicking and firing. She really stepped up and had a heck of a meet.

“Just about everybody had their season bests. For that to happen in our pool which is not necessarily a fast pool this was a good sign.”

South, which hosts a dual with PHS at 6 p.m. Thursday as part of rivalry week, recognized their lone two seniors – Paige Johnson and Remington Blair.

“Paige had an impressive meet – all the swimmers did really well,” Radcliff, who wanted to give a special shout out to the parents of the Parkersburg South swimmers for all their volunteering to make sure the meet went without a hitch. Their contributions have continued throughout the season.

“I’m blessed to have a great coaching staff and great parents,” Radcliff added. “I can’t say enough about our parents. They are heavily involved and make my job as coach so much easier.”
