Hoops roundup: Wirt’s Dawson scores 40, St. Marys’ Bulluck nets 39 in wins

Wirt County 75, Gilmer County 66

ELIZABETH — Playing for the second time in as many nights, Wirt County got a career performance from Braylan Dawson in a 75-66 win over Gilmer County Thursday.

Dawson made 16 field goals, including four 3-pointers, to finish with 40 points for the Tigers, who won their third straight game to improve to 8-2 on the year. Dawson also tallied five steals for Wirt, which led 12-8 after one, 26-20 at halftime and 49-41 going into the fourth.

Easton Wyer added a double-double for the Tigers, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Bevel chipped in six points and four assists.

Gilmer (2-8) was led by Kolten Holbert’s 21 points. Remi Huffman (14 points), Jacob Mick (11) and Tyler Ratliff (10) all finished in double figures as well while Lawson Hartshorn added six.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday — Gilmer plays host to Parkersburg Catholic while Wirt heads to Sherman.

GIRLS

St. Marys 66, Poca 33

POCA — Brynnley Bulluck put up a career-high 39 points to help lead Class A No. 2 St. Marys to a 66-33 win over Poca Thursday.

Bulluck buried six 3-pointers, went 9 for 9 at the free-throw line and tallied eight rebounds, five steals and three assists to help the Blue Devils, who visit Frontier at 11 a.m. Saturday, improve to 8-3.

Lauren Pritchett added a 10-point, 10-rebound double for St. Marys while Laney DeWeese finished with eight points, six boards and six steals. Landry Riggs pitched in five dimes and three steals as SMHS led 19-3 after one, 28-15 at halftime and 48-25 headed to the fourth.

The Dots (2-6) were led by Chloe Wheeler’s 11 points. Ahlivia Nehme added 10 and Bailey Ashbury registered nine.
