Hoops roundup: Wirt escapes Roane with win
SPENCER – Wirt County’s Braylan Dawson tallied 10 of his game-high 19 points in the second quarter here Wednesday night to help erase a Roane County 11-6 edge after one as the Tigers left town with a hard fought 37-31 Little Kanawha Conference triumph.
The 7-2 Tigers, who welcome in Gilmer County tonight, only led 18-17 at the break and 28-23 entering the fourth.
Roane County, now 1-7 with a home game Friday versus Poca, closed the deficit to 30-28 with 4:33 remaining following a pair of Zeke Taylor foul shots.
However, the Tigers got back-to-back buckets by Braxton Dennis to push ahead 34-28, but the orange and black lost Tyler Smith to a leg injury following a jump pass assist on Dennis’ second hoop with 2:45 to go.
Still trailing 34-31 after a Taylor 3, the Raiders had two good looks from beyond the arc to tie it, but couldn’t get one to fall.
Easton Wyer added a late foul shot to make it a two-possession affair while Alex Bevel, who had nine points, set the final score with 10 seconds left by converting both of his free-throw attempts.
Will Odle had a double-double in the setback with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. He also joined Dennis with a game-high three blocked shots. Taylor pitched in eight points and his trio of steals tied him for game-high honors with Smith.
Wyer finished with five points and a team-high seven rebounds while Dawson and Jake Moore added three assists apiece.
