Hoops roundup: Ravenswood girls knock off Buffalo, 57-54

BUFFALO — Ravenswood pulled off a surprise in Class AA girls basketball after defeating eighth-ranked Buffalo 57-54 on Tuesday night.

The game was tight from start to finish as the Red Devils outscored Buffalo 13-10 in the fourth quarter as the deciding margin of victory.

Emily Andrade led the Red Devilettes, making four 3-pointers as part of her team-high 25 points. Teammate Jayme Salser added 11 points to go with seven assists. In the post for Ravenswood, Marley Cole finished with 11 rebounds and five blocks to go with four points.

For Buffalo, Brook Woods made six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 28 points.

Gilmer County 45, Wirt County 34

ELIZABETH — Wirt County was feeling good about a potential upset of Class A No. 1 Gilmer County on Tuesday.

The Tigers held a 25-24 lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Titans outscored the hosts 22-8 over the final eight minutes to escape with a 45-34 victory.

Gilmer (8-1) got a game-high 19 points from Lena Frymier, who canned four 3-pointers. Ava Dobbins added 11 for the Titans, who finished 16 for 31 from the free-throw line compared to Wirt’s 3 for 4.

The Tigers got eight points from Mya Hatcher and six apiece from Izzy Speece and Peyten McKown.

Ritchie County 77, Calhoun County 24

MT. ZION — Elsa Law finished with 26 points, 11 steals, 10 rebounds and eight assists for a triple-double to lead Ritchie County past Calhoun County 77-24 Tuesday.

Callie Smith added 16 points, Emily Bush finished with 12 and Abbigayl Cox and Jordin Bailey chipped in 10 apiece. Bailey also grabbed six boards, Cox had five dimes while Smith registered four assists and four steals.

The Rebels (10-2), who visit St. Marys Thursday, led 24-8 after one, 41-9 at halftime and 61-15 after three.

Calhoun was led by Josie Richards’ seven points. Faith McClain added six.

BOYS

Fort Frye 52, Caldwell 51 (OT)

CALDWELL, Ohio — Wyatt Duskey’s basket with two seconds left in overtime gave Fort Frye a 52-51 victory over Caldwell Tuesday and helped deliver FFHS head coach Erin Henniger his 200th career victory.

The Cadets snapped a seven-game losing streak, which began with a 47-32 loss to the Redskins on Dec. 30. It looked like it might be more of the same this time around as the Cadets trailed 18-9 after one. However, Fort Frye outscored Caldwell 12-5 in the second to cut it to 23-21 by halftime. It was 31-30 after three before the Cadets outscored the hosts 12-11 in the fourth to force OT.

Dylan Schott, who finished with a game-high 24 points, splashed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the extra session to put CHS up 51-50.

Grady Hesson had the ball at the top of the key for the Cadets. With the final seconds ticking away, Hesson dished to Duskey, who slashed straight the basket and put up a shot off the glass and in. Schott’s full-court heave came up short.

Caden Henniger led Fort Frye, which visits Marietta Thursday, with 14 points. Kainan Bradford added 10 points while Duskey and Hesson chipped in seven apiece. Hesson also finished with six rebounds and a game-high five assists while Terry Tompkins led all rebounders with 10 to go along with six points and three steals.

Schott knocked down five 3-pointers for Clint Crane’s Redskins, who also got 10 points from Kyler Starr. Guiler Preston added nine rebounds and a game-high four steals while Dalton Egnot chipped in seven boards. Caldwell, which gets a week off before heading to rival Shenandoah next Tuesday, finished just 18 for 52 (34.6%) from the floor and 8 for 18 from the free-throw line.

Doddridge County 83, Tyler Consolidated 54

WEST UNION — Five players scored in double figures for Class AA No. 3 Doddridge County in an 83-54 win over visiting Tyler Consolidated Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs (12-1) led 19-12 after one, 45-31 at halftime and 65-42 going into the fourth en route to their fifth straight victory. Malachi Kelley led DCHS, which defeated the Silver Knights 70-45 back in the season opener, with 14 points. Landon Thomas and Jaden Solomon chipped in 12 points apiece, Josh DeHaven added 11 and Jerod Trent netted 10. Heston Hayes pitched in eight points for Doddridge, which is off until Thursday, Jan. 29, when it visits Ritchie County.

Tyler (3-8) was led by Ashton Morris’ 11 points, followed by Kolbin Highley with nine, Austin Peck with eight, Garrett Bordenkircker with seven and Landon Boggs with six.

Ripley 61, Sissonville 33

SISSONVILLE — Ripley’s defensive pressure caused all kinds of problems for host Sissonville in Tuesday’s 61-33 Vikings win.

Ripley (10-3) registered 21 steals and SHS (2-9) committed 26 total turnovers in the contest. Parker Smith finished with game-highs of 15 points, seven rebounds, six steals and two blocks. Blake Justice and Matthew Stellato added 10 points apiece, Creed Waskey tallied nine, Kyler Doss netted eight and Brady McVay chipped in seven for RHS, which plays host to John Marshall on Saturday.

Sissonville got 12 points from June Jackson and six from Zane Baldwin.

Union Local 70, Magnolia 37

BELMONT, Ohio — Brody Kerns poured in a game-high 34 points to help lead Union Local past Magnolia 70-37 Tuesday.

Kerns made 16 field goals for the Jets (8-7), who held the Blue Eagles (6-6) to 13 second-half points. ULHS led 14-9 after one, 33-22 at halftime and 57-32 going into the fourth.

Bam Porter added 14 points for Union Local, which also got eight from Jacob Stroud and six from Izayha Hall.

Magnolia, which visits Tucker County on Friday, got 15 points from Kingston Christen and eight apiece from Jessup Higgans and Drake Christen.

Sherman 54, Wirt County 30

SETH — Wirt County scored just two points in the first quarter and never recovered as Sherman pulled away for a 54-30 win Tuesday.

Ranked No. 10 in Class A, the Tide’s only loss of the season came at the hands of the Tigers on Dec. 30. Things were much different this time around as Sherman led 11-2 after one, 29-13 at halftime and 42-25 going into the fourth.

Chase Mills and Trey Lester scored 15 points apiece to lead the Tide, who won their fourth straight game and improved to 9-1.

Wirt (8-3), which had its three-game winning streak snapped, received 13 points from Alex Bevel and six each from Jake Moore and Braxton Dennis.

The Tigers, who were playing without injured senior starter Tyler Smith, will look to bounce back on Friday when they visit Calhoun County.

Wood County Christian 104, Parkersburg Christian 43

PARKERSBURG – Six different Wood County Christian players combined for 13 3-pointers as the Wildcats defeated Parkersburg Christian, 104-43, on Tuesday night.

Asher Fenton led the way for WCCS (6-4) with five threes as part of his 23 points. Teammate Peyton Russell did his damage inside the arc for 10 field goals and a game-high 24 points.

Four WCCS players scored in double figures, including Daniel Cunningham with 17 points and Cameron Coppernoll with 12 points.

Malik Johnson led Parkersburg Christian with 11 points.

Waterford 61, River Valley 27

WATERFORD — A lot has changed since Waterford dropped a 52-43 road decision to River Valley on Dec. 29.

The Wildcats avenged the loss Tuesday when the Raiders came to the Harry Cooper Annex, pulling away for a 61-27 blowout win. Waterford (6-8) has now won four straight games.

Finn Pennock knocked down four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 18 points. Gavin Hiener added 13, Reese Lang chipped in 10 and Avery Pottmeyer tallied nine.

Waterford, which visits Southern on Friday, led 15-7 after one, 34-13 at halftime and 48-17 going into the fourth.

River Valley (6-10) got eight points from Branden Bennett, seven from Landon Burns and six from Tyler Wooten.
