Hoops roundup: PHS girls down Hurricane, 63-48

HURRICANE — A dominant second quarter helped propel Parkersburg past Hurricane 63-48 Friday night.

The Big Reds (9-2) took a 19-13 lead into the second period before outscoring the Redskins 25-9 in the second period. PHS, which plays host to rival Parkersburg South on Thursday, never looked back.

Frances Guice led the Big Reds with 14 points. Lauren Flanagan and Kennedy Porter added 13 points apiece while Lucie Cline knocked down four 3-pointers for 12 points. Porter grabbed a whopping 18 rebounds to go along with three steals, Cline finished eight eight boards and four assists while Flanagan had a team-high seven dimes.

Gilmer County 64, Parkersburg Catholic 41

GLENVILLE — A pair of top five teams in Class A squared off Friday in Gilmer County, with the top-ranked Titans claiming a 64-41 win over No. 4 Parkersburg Catholic.

GCHS (8-0) led 15-10 after the first quarter but stretched its advantage to 14, 30-16, by halftime. Gilmer then held the Crusaderettes (9-3) to just two points in the third period to go up 45-18 with eight minutes to play.

Blair Dobbins paced the Titans with a game-high 20 points. Ava Dobbins added 14 points, Lena Frymier buried four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points while Paige Sterns chipped in 11 and Kenley Hartshorn tallied seven.

Catholic was led by Annie Tokodi-Ruth’s 16 points. Caroline Wynn added nine points while Macy Singer contributed eight.

Steubenville 51, Warren 36

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Nylah McShan poured in a game-high 28 points as 14-1 Steubenville proved to be too much for Warren in a 51-36 Bid Red victory Friday.

Steubenville, which led 17-10 after one, 25-15 at halftime and 41-25 going into the fourth, also got 14 points from Lucy Jo Saccoccia.

The Warriors, who fell to 7-6 and visit Belpre on Monday, were led by Jayda Murray’s 12 points. Josie Venham and DeLaney Gates added seven points each.

Ritchie 66, Braxton 22

ELLENBORO — Elsa Law put up a statline to remember in Ritchie County’s 66-22 win over Braxton County Friday.

Law registered the rare quadruple-double, finishing with game-highs of 28 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds and 10 steals to lead the Rebels (9-2), who also got 13 points from Callie Smith, eight from Abbigayl Cox and seven apiece from Chelsie Jeffrey and Emily Bush.

Ritchie, which visits Calhoun County on Tuesday, led 26-6 after one, 41-8 at halftime and 55-13 going into the fourth.

Braxton got seven points from Bailey Pritt and six from Rylan Priner.

BOYS

Ripley 71, Winfield 69 (2 OT)

RIPLEY – Brody Ilderton produced a 17-point, game-high 23-rebound double-double here Friday night, but it wasn’t enough for Winfield as the triple-A No. 10 Generals were upended by No. 9 Ripley in double overtime, 71-69.

The Vikings, who improved to 9-3 and just lost a double OT affair on Tuesday at Nitro, went into the first extra session even at 59, but neither team dented the scoreboard.

Kyler Doss led all point-producers with 20 for the Vikings, who also received double figures in scoring from Parker Smith (15), Blake Justice (12) and Matthew Stellato (11). Brady McVay chipped in nine points and had 11 rebounds.

Winfield, which has now lost consecutive games after starting 6-0, also had double digit scoring efforts by Owen Jones (14), Carter Workman (12) and Owen Taylor (11).

Ripley, which heads Tuesday to Sissonville, also received a game-high four assists from Smith.

The Generals will look to get back on track the same night when Wayne invades.

Frontier 50, Cameron 18

NEW MATAMORAS — Frontier swarmed on defense Friday night, holding Cameron to two first-quarter points and six first-half points en route to a 50-18 win at Hank Morus Gym.

The Cougars, winners of five straight with a road trip to Bridgeport due up next on Wednesday, led 16-2 after one, 27-6 at halftime and 48-14 after three.

Jacob Bowersock led all scorers with 18 points. Avery Powell added 16 for Frontier, which improved to 9-4, while Kason Hoff, who made four 3-pointers, tacked on 14 points.

The Dragons (3-7) were led by Carter Paczewski and Danny Yoss, who tallied six points apiece.

Cross Lanes Christian 72, Wood County Christian 62

CROSS LANES – An impressive second-quarter performance from Cross Lanes Christian was Wood County Christian’s downfall in a 72-62 loss on Friday night.

Landon Ballard scored eight of his game-high 22 points as Cross Lanes Christian outscored the Wildcats 25-6 in the second period.

Wood County Christian found its offensive production in the second half after scoring 40 points, including. Wildcats’ Asher Fenton accounted for 12 of his team-high 21 points after halftime.

Also scoring in double figures for WCCS (5-4) were Daniel Cunningham with 16 points and Peyton Russell with 11 points.
