Hoops roundup: Williamstown girls win showdown with Logan
WILLIAMSTOWN — A big third quarter was just what the doctor ordered in No. 3 Williamstown’s 44-31 win over No. 7 Logan Saturday.
Trailing 20-17 at halftime, the Yellowjackets outscored the Wildcats 19-7 in the third to take control and improve to 5-0.
Quinn Bunch led Williamstown with 19 points while Gracie Montgomery added 11 and Arissa Burt chipped in six. Bunch added four steals and three assists to her statline while Burt tallied eight rebounds and two blocks. Maggie Frye pulled down a game-high nine boards.
WHS will visit Oak Glen Monday, Dec. 29 before rematching Logan on Friday, Jan. 2.
Logan, which dropped to 1-2, got 11 points from Miley Fleming and eight more from Jayden Bailey.
Parkersburg South 73, Oak Hill 36
OAK HILL — Parkersburg South pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring host Oak Hill 20-6 on the way to a 73-36 victory Saturday.
The Patriots (4-1) were ahead 20-15 after one but took a 40-21 advantage into halftime and never looked back.
Lindsey Logston scored a game-high 22 points to lead South, which plays host to Charleston Catholic at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Logston also tallied five steals. Quinn Bolyard added 19 points and four assists while Kenna Mace chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds. Grace Dotson also pulled down eight boards.
Oak Hill (1-3) got 15 points from Natalie Craddock plus nine from Bella Holly and seven from Ali Williams.
Warren 38, Fairfield Union 28
LANCASTER, Ohio — Warren handed Fairfield Union its first loss of the season Saturday, taking down the host Falcons 38-28.
The Warriors (5-2) got a game-high 17 points from Aubrey Pepper, who went 8 for 9 at the free-throw line. Danica Gates added seven points for the Warriors, who play host to Meigs on Monday.
The previously unbeaten Falcons scored just two points in the first quarter and trailed 20-9 by halftime. Warren led 26-16 going into the fourth and controlled things from there.
Annesley Leith led FUHS with 10 points. Taylor Smeck netted eight while Xaley Bojanowski chipped in seven.
Caldwell 53, Crooksville 36
CALDWELL, Ohio — Caldwell improved to 8-2 with a 53-36 win over visiting Crooksville Saturday.
The Redskins, who visit Monroe Central Tuesday, were led by Breighlee Moracco’s 13 points. Lyla Lowe added nine points and eight rebounds while Mea Hendershot finished with eight points, nine boards, four assists and three steals. Camy Crock chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds for Caldwell, which led 10-4 after one, 20-9 at halftime and 34-23 after three.
The bulk of Crooksville’s scoring came from Alexia VanMeter and Lilah Frame, who went a combined 16 for 22 at the free-throw line. VanMeter was 8 for 14 and scored a game-high 15 points while Frame added 14 points and was 8 for 8 at the stripe. The Ceramics dropped to 2-4.
Boys
Wood County Christian 68, Madonna 61
WEIRTON — Asher Fenton and Peyton Russell poured in 21 points apiece to lead Wood County Christian to a 68-61 win over Madonna Saturday.
Fenton hit three 3-pointers and went 8 for 9 at the free-throw line while Russell added a trio of treys. Daniel Cunningham added 14 points for the Wildcats, who improved to 3-0 on the year.
Madonna, which trailed 18-10 after one and 32-24 at halftime, trimmed the deficit to 50-48 by the end of the third. However, WCCS outscored the hosts 18-13 over the final eight minutes to claim the victory.
MHS got 19 points from Reno Fuscardo, 17 from Jake Druga, 11 from Luke Wingett and 10 from Vinny Chiodi.
