Hoops roundup: South girls win opener
FAIRMONT — Four Parkersburg Patriots scored in double figures to kick off the season with a 77-39 win over Musselman Friday in Fairmont Senior’s Friendly City Mixer.
South’s freshman class made a strong first impression with the varsity squad.
Lindsey Logston led the way with a game-high 20 points to go along with eight assists, five steals and two blocks. Classmate Quinn Bolyard added 19 points for the Patriots, who led 18-8 after one, 40-21 at halftime and 61-34 after three, while fellow ninth-grader Olivia Conaway chipped in 11 points and two blocks.
Senior Emilee Owens flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 15 points, eight dimes, seven rebounds and five steals.
Musselman was led by Kadrie Stanley’s 10 points. Payton Smith added nine.
Ravenswood 40, Braxton 21
RAVENSWOOD — Ravenswood did not allow a point in the third quarter of Friday’s 40-21 win over Braxton County.
The Red Devils (2-0) led 18-16 at halftime but outscored the Eagles 8-0 in the third period and 14-7 in the fourth to pull away.
Emily Andrade led all scorers with 14 points to go along with three steals. Jayme Salser added eight points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals while Jayden Moore chipped in seven points and four steals. Rachel Lambert contributed six points and eight boards for the Red Devils, who won despite shooting just 26.9% (14 for 52) from the floor.
Braxton (0-2) received 10 points from Abrey Mowery and nine from Avah Mollogan.
Ritchie County 68, South Harrison 23
LOST CREEK — Ritchie County was dominant in its season opener Thursday at South Harrison, rolling to a 68-23 victory.
Four Rebels scored in double figures, led by Chelsie Jeffrey’s 17. Jeffrey also registered nine steals. Abbigayl Cox added 16 points and six rebounds, Elsa Law finished with 15 points, 12 assists, seven boards and five steals and Callie Smith chipped in 10 points, seven steals and five dimes. Emily Bush produced eight points for Ritchie, which shot 42.9% (30 for 70) from the floor.
The RCHS defense, which tallied a whopping 36 steals in the contest, swarmed early and did not allow a point to the Hawks in the opening quarter. Ritchie led 25-0 after one, 47-10 at halftime and 60-19 going into the fourth.
South Harrison got 13 points from Adalee Wright.
Boys
Waterford 57, Eastern 50
REEDSVILLE — Waterford withstood Eastern’s second-half rally and held on for a 57-50 victory Friday night.
The Wildcats (1-1) led 28-9 at halftime but were outscored 20-9 in the third as their lead was trimmed to eight points going into the final period. The Eagles (0-3) outscored Waterford 21-20 over the final eight minutes, but it wasn’t enough.
Finn Pennock and Reese Lang combined to go 18 for 22 at the free-throw line to help the Waterford cause. Pennock led all scorers with 21 points while Lang added 14 and Colby Roberts chipped in eight. As a team, the Wildcats, who play host to Southern Thursday, went 28 for 40 at the charity stripe.
Eastern got 19 points from Colt Lloyd, eight from Boo Balch and seven apiece from Derrick Barnes and Ethan Edwards.
Caldwell 46, Morgan 37
McCONNELSVILLE — A second-half comeback propelled Caldwell to a 46-37 road victory over Morgan Friday night.
The Redskins (3-0) trailed 21-19 at halftime but outscored the Raiders 14-8 in the third to take a 33-29 advantage into the fourth and held on from there.
Guiler Preston paced the visitors with 11 points while Dylan Schott was close behind with 11. Dalton Egnot chipped in nine points for Caldwell, which plays host to rival Shenandoah Tuesday.
Morgan (0-2), which plays Meadowbrook at home Tuesday, got a game-high 21 points from Luke Coleman. Carsen Huck just missed double figures with nine.
